Meet the Ghanaian female student representing Africa

Lily Ama Tugbah will represent Ghana at a Spelling Bee competition in the United States of America.

However, 12-year-old Lily Ama Tugbah emerged the national winner.

"I feel so excited. I can't believe this is happening. I'm grateful to everybody, especially God for helping me come this far. My parents, my family, my friends, everybody has helped me make this dream a reality," Lily said right after winning the competition.

For a child who could not lift her head at church to read Bible verses, Lily beat out more than 190 kids in 12 rounds worth of competition.

Her winning word was "baculiform."

She received GHC10,000 from Ecobank, a DStv HD decoder with a year’s subscription, all expenses paid trip to Multichoice studios in South Africa, GHC10,000 from Indomie and many other products from sponsors.

The Ghana Spelling Bee competition features kids from four of the 10 regions of Ghana. The kids who competed in the final in Accra were those who had already competed in their home region.

Kids in the spelling bee can compete until they turn 14 years old.

Lily will in May, fly to the U.S. to represent Ghana and the entire African continent in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

"It's a really great honor … I plan on doing everything possible to make Ghana proud," Lily said.
