In the preliminary round, Lily Tugbah who was speller number 243 failed to spell the word 'splanchnology'.

Nana Addo, Adom Appiah and Gabriel Ennin who are all Ghanaians based in the United States of America have however progressed to the next round of the competition.

Speller 147, Adom Appiah spelled the world ‘ostreiculture’ with Nana Addo, speller 155 spelling imprecatory.

Gabriel Ennin who is speller 157 spelled ‘tragedian’ to progress to the next round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Another Ghanaian speller Meryl Tigenoah who is from Minnesota spelled ‘dodecarchy’ as speller number 286 correctly.
