Danger looms at Agogo Basic schools over dilapidated structures

Pupils and teachers at basic schools in the Asante Akyem North District of the Ashanti Region stands in danger due to dilapidated and life-threatening structures.

Schools in the district stands in danger of collapsing and causing havoc if steps are not taken to demolish it quickly.

Lack of furniture and the bad state of the building negatively affect teaching and learning as pupils have to make do with the old dilapidated structure without enough furniture.

The total enrolment of the school at Nhyiaeso D/A Basic School is250 and it's one of the deprived schools in the Asante Akyem North District.

Many of the pupils are also without uniforms and footwear.

The District Director of Education, Ernest Kwadwo Afari, according to reports by Accra-based Joy FM said the lives of pupils and teachers are under serious threat.

He said "If teachers do not have any decent place to lay their heads, it affects their performance. And not only that; you go to some schools and the nature of the classroom block demoralizes them a lot."

"It’s a very disturbing one because it is within our policy to ensure that we create the necessary enabling environment where teachers can deliver their best; where learners can also learn at their best. But looking at the nature of the structure here, you can see whether the spirit of teachers are high to deliver, teachers can see such a community and accept postings to come and stay here and work. When parents have agreed to release their children to go to school, they come and this is what is facing them," he said.
