The students, who were Standard Six boys of the Kirimon Primary School on the Samburu-Laikipia counties border reportedly went to classes with clubs and machetes, to protest against being punished by female teachers.

Three teachers were seriously injured in the process. Others had to escape to their homes and nearby bushes in order to avoid the attack.

A police officer arrived at the scene and fired several times in the air but yielded no results.

He also sustained injuries as the students hurled stones at him.

Parents and residents who rushed to the school to help the teachers and the policeman were also attacked.

More than 700 pupils were ordered to go home following the incident.

This happens to be the third time such an incident is happening in the school.

Similar incidents took place in 2010 and 2013.

“We have experienced this before but today’s (Monday's) attack was the worst because the boys sneaked into classrooms with swords and rungus,” a teacher who requested anonymity told journalists.

As at the time of publishing this story, officers from the Teachers Service Commission and other education stakeholders in Samburu County were in a closed-door meeting with members of the school board of management over the matter.
