Government to reconstitute UEW Council this week

The Governing Councils of other tertiary institutions will also be reconstituted in a few days’ time.

The Minister of State responsible for Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, has assured that the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) will be reconstituted within the week.

According to him, the Governing Councils of other tertiary institutions will also be reconstituted in a few days’ time.

He made this known at a press conference after a crucial meeting with the management of the UEW at its North Campus.

He urged the students to exercise patience as the government is doing all it can to find a solution to the recent impasse.

The University was last week Tuesday closed down temporarily following a court case brought against it by a former Assemblyman of Donkoryiem, Supi Kofi Kwayera over the continuous stay of the school’s Council.

The Council’s mandatory four year term expired in 2013. However, the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government ordered the Council to act until a substantive one is appointed.

The Education Minister at the time, Professor Naana Opoku Agyemang said that the protracted election petition in 2013 and some challenges facing the education sector were to be blamed for the extension.

But the businessman was not happy with the development. He subsequently filed a suit at a Winneba High Court demanding that all decisions taken by the Council to be declared null and void.

The Assemblyman is also seeking the declaration that the extension of the mandate of the Governing Council by the University and Education Ministry was in breach of Section 8 of Act 972.

The University has since reopened.

Professor Yankah has since indicated that the court ruling will determine whether the decision taken by the alleged illegal governing council as well as graduates certificate will be revoked or not.

However, he said he hoped that the yet-to-be-formed governing council would work hard towards an out-of-court settlement.
