The Catholic Bishops’ conference has asked Ghana’s legislature to speed up the process of passing the Education Bill into Law.

This was contained in the communiqué issued by the Conference after their annual plenary assembly held in Tamale in the Northern Region.

“We, wish to plead with the State, especially the Legislature, the Ministry of Education and other key stakeholders, to expedite action on the passing of the Education Bill into law.”

Most schools owned by religious bodies in the country have demanded a level of control over their institutions, but the government has been slow in taking a stance on this request. In the communiqué, they expressed hope that the bill, when passed, will bring more clarity in the roles of various stakeholders in managing the school.

“It is our hope that this important Bill, when passed into law, will clarify the specific role and partnership between the Church and State in addressing more firmly, fairly and responsibly the needs of education in our country.”

It added that “we insist that the Bill should take into consideration the proposals the Christian Council of Ghana, the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and other faith-based institutions have tabled before the Minister for Education.”
