After gaining admission to the university there are decisions to be taken. Most of these decisions will go a long way to making your stay on campus a good or bad one.

One of such major decisions you need to take is on your accommodation. Where you live can have a serious impact on your health and general well-being. There are many options to consider for before choosing an accommodation. Below are a number of such.

1. Home or away?

Before you think of an accommodation you should have decided whether you want to stay at home or in a hostel. There are pros and cons for both decisions. In recent times when most people attend tertiary institutions outside their home regions, it is only prudent to get a hostel. After you have decided to live in a hostel go ahead and consider the rest below.

2. Value for money (Cost)

How much are you required to pay for rent? Will there be value for money? Consider the amenities available in the hostel and compare it to the cost involved. Will you benefit if you paid? Or would you be ‘cheated’ by the hostel owners if you rented it?

3. Proximity to other amenities

Your hostel cannot be close to every needed facility but it should at least be close some essential infrastructure. Examples include hospital, market and even your school. If the needed infrastructure is not close to you there should be a way of getting to them easily from your hostel. This means the commuting to such needed facilities should be easy.

4. Safety

In this era where security is key, you need to consider your safety before deciding on which hostel to reside in. Keep in mind that, you will be staying in your chosen hostel for a minimum of four months.

5. Recommendations from other users

Is there a way to get recommendations or otherwise from people who have lived in the hostel before? If there is please do. This will help you know what to expect and how to go about things in the hostel. ‘Experience is the best teacher,’ learn from other people who have been in your chosen hostel before. Ask enough questions to help make your stay an easy one.
