Rocky Dawuni‘s first ever nomination at the 58th edition of Grammy Awards has been one of the greatest news this year. Though he is a Ghanaian, who has achieved a lot of success in his career, a few Ghanaian music lovers are finding it difficult to know him.

So Pulse.com.gh has gathered 17 important facts you probably didn’t know about the Grammys nominee.
1. Rocky Dawuni is a Ghanaian Reggae act who lives in Los Angeles, United States of America.

2. Dawuni got acquainted with Reggae in Ghana when he heard a military band performing one of Bob Marley’s compositions in Michel Camp, a military barracks.

3. Dawuni started the annual “Independence Splash” festival, which is held in Ghana on Ghanaian Independence Day, every March 6.

4. He has 5 studio albums namely “The Movement” in 1996, “Crusade” in 1998, “Awakening” 2001, “Book of Changes” in 2005, “Hymns for the Rebel Soul” in 2010 and “Branches of The Same Tree” in 2015.

5. His track has been featured on international television networks including Showtime and NBC.

6. His tracks has been featured on the world’s most popular Games; “African Thriller” on FIFA World Cup Brazil2014, “African Soccer Fever” on FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010, “Download The Revolution” on FIFA 102009, “The One” on The Sims 2: Castaway 2008 and “Wake Up The Town” on FIFA 08 2007.

7. Rocky was named one of Africa’s Top 10 global stars by CNN in 2011.

8. Dawuni has shared the stage with Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Bono, Jason Mraz, Janelle Monae and John Legend, among many others.

9.  He has showcased his talent at prestigious venues such as The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

10. His father is called Koytau Dawuni and was raised at Michel Camp, a millitary barracks in Tema.

11. While at University of Ghana, Legon to pursue a degree in philosophy and psychology, he formed his first band, ‘Local Crisis’, with a group of friends.

12. His wife Cary Sullivan is his manager.

13. Dawuni’s cover of John Lennon’s “Well Well Well” appeared on the digital bonus version of the Amnesty International benefit album Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur, which was released by Warner Brothers in 2007 and featured appearances by U2, R.E.M., Aerosmith featuring Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, Black Eyed Peas and others.

14. He has worked with international foundations including Product (RED), UNICEF, the Carter Center, and the UN Foundation.

15. His latest studio album released on March 31, 2015 titled “Branches of the Same Tree” hit No. 10 on the international grading Reggae chart, Billboard in September.

16. Rocky Dawuni joined Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights’s Leadership Council this year.

17. And yesterday, December 7, he became the first Ghanaian act to get a nomination at the world’s most prestigious Grammys.
