It took them about four months to accomplish this because they only worked on it after classes and on weekends.

It took the two male and two females about four months to accomplish the dress that has earned lots of applause across the globe.

One might wonder if the leaves would not rot, but the students were not completely ignorant that possibility.

According to odditycentral.com, the students removed the flesh by boiling them in an alkali and sodium carbonate solution for about two hours. This made the flesh easier peel it away, leaving only the “skeleton” of the leaf, a thin film with all the intricate veins left intact.

It was not easy for the four students to get the proportions of alkali and sodium carbonate and the boiling time right, to ensure that the flesh could be easily removed without damaging the skeleton of the leaf.

Just as any new invention, the students did not have a completely smooth process. They finally succeeded after trial and error, and with their teacher’s guidance.

Because they are students, they hardly had time to focus on the project to complete it in good time. They could only work on their special dress after classes and on weekends, so it took them nearly four months to complete.
