Man sells wife’s kidney to compensate himself for GHS 142 dowry her family failed to pay

Rita Sarkar reportedly fell ill and was taken to the hospital by Biswajit Sarkar and it became imperative to remove her right kidney for treatment due to infection. However, unknown to Rita, the kidney was never placed back.

Africanspotlight.com quoted her as recounting that, “Around two years ago, I began suffering from acute stomach ache,' Mrs Sarkar, from Murshidabad, West Bengal state told Hindustan Times.

“My husband took me to a private nursing home in Kolkata, where he and the medical staff told me that I would be fine after removing my inflamed appendix through surgery.”

It only dawned on the poor woman that the husband had perpetrated a life-threatening mischief on her when she was taken to the hospital again, but this time by her own family, after suffering some other health problems including lower back pain.

Doctors’ examination revealed that her right kidney was nonexistent.

Rita said, “I then understood why my husband implored me to keep quiet about the surgery. He sold my kidney because my family couldn't meet his demand for dowry.”

After his arrest together with his brother who apparently was an accomplice, Biswajit Sarkar admitted to having sold the kidney to a businessman, but claimed that Rita had given consent to donating the kidney.

Reports say it is illegal of women to pay dowry to their husbands in India, but the practice is prevalent in certain parts of the country.
