The spread of the Zika virus

A pregnant woman has been diagnosed with the Zika virus in Spain, marking the first such case in Europe.
 
 

Even though other European countries including Ireland and Denmark have reported infections, this is the first time Spain is recording a case involving a pregnant woman, statista.com has reported.

Zika is a mosquito-borne disease that has symptoms similar to the dengue and chikungunya viruses.

The World Health Organisation has indicated that Zika requires an urgent, united response considering the rate at which the virus is spreading so far and fast.

WHO director general, Margaret Chan has indicated that priorities should be on protecting pregnant women and their babies from harm and to control the mosquitoes that are spreading the virus.
