Kati G pushes the envelope with her lesbian music video

Ghanaian music newcomer, Kati G suffer backlash with lesbian themed music video

When Russian girl group, tATU was introduced as a lesbian pop group sometime in the early 2000s, they became an instant global phenomenon bigger than the few criticisms against them. In fact the criticisms even propelled their careers further. So how far can a new artist go in Ghana, after pushing the envelope a little bit on the issue of lesbianism in her debut music video?

Ghanaians may be familiar with the forbidden love stories based on interracial relationships, tribal prejudice and more, but new artist,  Kati G has to a whole new level - hitting on the controversial reality of the universal argument on same sex love.In Kati G’s video, 'What Am I Doing Here' she makes her viewers believe that a man and woman desire a relationship together and because of certain circumstances, they can’t be together . But she cleverly twists it around into lesbian relation, and already the backlash has started! She has explained on several platforms that she is not promoting lesbianism, but rather simply telling a story in relation to the song from a different angle. Although the video was released in 2013 on YouTube, it is only now getting attention in Ghana, as a result of the promotion of Kati G's music in the country.

She said, "many of my friends have reached out to me confidentially confessing their thoughts of committing suicide or struggling with being what society considers inhumane. They live isolated mentally and cannot think past fear or being free. Through my music video, I wanted to show and describe to everyone what they are going through."

So what's your take on the controversial video? Is Ghana ready for this on our national TV?
