The Interior Ministry has reviewed the curfew hours in the Alavanyo and Nkonya townships in the Volta Region.

This was contained in a press statement from the Interior Ministry.

The statement indicated that thus decision was taken following advice from the Volta Regional Security Council.

Effective today (Friday, October 28), the curfew hours have been renewed from 11:00pm to 5:00pm.

There has been a dispute between the people in Alavanyo and Nkonya over a land for decades now. This has led to the death and injury of many people in the area. Attempts to solve this dispute by various stsakeholders have proven futile.

In a related development the Ministry has on the advice of the Northern Regional Security Council also renewed the curfew hours of the Kpatinga, Bimbilla and Bunkpurugu townships.

Kpatinga’s curfew hours have been renewed from 12:00 midnight to 4:00am, Bimbila from 10:00pm to 4:00am and Bunkpurugu from 8:00pm to 6:00am.

All the renewals take effect from Friday, 28th October 2016.

The statement urged residents in these areas to use non-violent means in settling their differences.

“Government continues to urge chiefs, opinion leaders, youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace to the area.”

The statement also reminded the residents in such areas that “carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon. Any person found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.”

The curfew hours were imposed on the town after some disputes erupted between the Jamong and Jafog clans in the Bunkprugu traditional area for decades.

There are now attempts to bring peaceful co-existence between the two clans.
