The Chairman of the Poultry Farmers Association of Ghana, Victor Oppong Adjei, says the importation of frozen chicken into the country is collapsing the poultry industry.

According to him, about 95 percent of the market has been taken by imported chicken, leaving the local poultry farmers to compete for the remaining five percent.

Mr Adjei further said even with the five percent, they are finding it difficult to sell.

He disclosed this in an Interview with Citi during this year's World Egg Day celebrations.

“Well the situation has not changed it’s the same. About 95% of the market has been taken by the imported frozen chicken. And even the 5% we are still finding it very difficult to sell," Mr Adjei said.

Mr Adjei added that what baffles him is that the frozen chicken is so cheap here compared to where they are imported from.

He, therefore, called investigation to establish why frozen chicken is so cheap.

"What baffles me is that if you travel abroad, chicken is not as cheap as it is been sold here. So we need to investigate and see why it is not cheap there but very cheap when brought here,” he said.

At the UN General Assembly last month, president John Mahama linked importation of frozen chicken to migration.

He explained that Ghanaians who embark on the risky journey to Europe are poultry farmers or entrepreneurs who "sell their shops and undertake the journey because they can no longer compete with the tons of frozen chicken dumped on African markets annually, or the adverse business environment they have to face."
