Fuel shortage hits Nigeria

Many Nigerians travelling to work have been left stranded either at fuel stations or due to shortage of commercial buses because they do not have fuel.

Nigeria has been hit with fuel shortage for almost three days now, causing long queues outside petrol stations.

Fuel shortage in Nigeria is a yearly occurrence. Pulse.com.ng describes it was “annual visitor.”

Nigeria is Africa’s biggest economy and a leading producer of crude oil but its oil industry has an opaque system of administration.

An audit report found that Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) could not account for $16 million it was supposed to handover to the federal government.

Nigeria imports almost have of its oil needs despite having six oil refineries.

President Muhammadu Buhari last month announced measures to break up NNPC into 30 units to ensure efficiency and transparency.

His government says its inherited massive debt from the previous regime, making raising letters of credit to import oil extremely difficult.

On twitter, one account going by the name @AkahDestiny tweeted “No light for 5 days straight up now The heat is unbearable There is no fuel for generator Dear Nigeria, kuku kill me!!"

Another user, @MsAdetunji, tweeted “Can't stay at home because there's no light; can't enjoy AC in your car because there's no fuel; can't go out all the time cuz no money”
