"The park always felt safe to me," she said. "I've not lived here long, but I had read about stabbings in the area. It does make you think twice about walking through [the park] at night."

After a port mortem, Scotland Yard confirmed that the cause of death was a stab wound and identified the victim as one David Darko.

Mother of the victim, Ivy Darko, paid tribute to her son, speaking as friends and family gathered to mourn David at the family home in Canal Walk.

According to her, David had dreams of becoming a railway engineer, but had taken up a job at a Sainbury's supermarket in Streatham to save up on college money.

She said: "I want to beg the public, the community, parents to come forward if they know something. Some parents know what their children do and they cover up.

"I'm begging, whoever has any information should come out, so these perpetrators can be brought to justice.

"He doesn't mix himself with them [criminal types] He doesn't do what a young person shouldn't be doing."

David was a former Archbishop Lanfranc and Croydon College student.

No arrests have since been made.
