Management stops planned demonstration by staff

The demonstration was to register KOSSA's displeasure over what it calls mismanagement of the health facility by management.

But, the Director of Administration at the facility, Nurudeen Mohammed in a statement said the planned action was uncalled for because management has not been informed.

“Should the intended demonstration be on account of matters not related to Korle-bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), then KOSSA and the individual employees involved do not have the permission of the hospital to embark on the demonstration on the premises of KBTH,” the statement said.

“Management takes seriously KOSSA and its individual member’s repeated acts which disrupts services and creates undue tension in the hospital as well as negatively affecting public confidence in the ability of the hospital to meet their needs,” the statement added.

But speaking to the media the General Secretary of KOSSA, James Oblitey indicated that Korle Bu Teaching hospital is Ghana’s premiere hospital where the good people of Ghana seek medical care and it is therefore calling for patient centered and prudent management in order to achieve its objectives.

”...After all, haven’t we entreated our government institutions to the president but if anybody wants to stage a demonstration they apply to the police and thereby given the nod.

“How can we the major stakeholders in korle Bu be  prevented when we have informed the police and all bodies responsible, but have the courage and confidence that next week INSHA Allah the demonstration will come on,” he added.

The Korle Bu Teaching hospital has been faced with several challenges recently, with staff accusing its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Gilbert Buckle of mismanaging the hospital’s internally generated funds and paying what they termed needless judgement debts.

The CEO assumed office in July 2014, following staff agitation against then acting CEO, Rev. Albert Okpoti Botwe, and then Board Chair Eddie Annan over similar concerns.

Sources at the hospital have told Pulse.com.ghthat the hospital is suffering from severe shortage of consumables, including surgery gowns for doctors to wear before carrying out their operation, sterilization machines, and so on.

They argue the situation is having a toll on their operations.

A lot of patients were recently left stranded because they could not get access to ICU facilities.

President of Korle Bu Senior Staff Association (KOSSA), Mr.Charles Offei-Palmwas earlier this month relieved of his post for allegedly defying a media policy by granting an interview to an Accra-based radio station, during which he made some offensive comments against management.
