In April this year, the Unit predicted a close margin win for the NPP in a report and has again indicated that though both the presidential and parliamentary elections would be hostile the NPP will be declared victorious.

The report also states that the NDC would be voted out of power due to the adverse economic conditions in the country touching on the effect of an increase in taxes and utility prices which according to them have made the cost of living high for many Ghanaians.

The EIU said: "Pre-election spending in 2016 will put pressure on the fiscal deficit target set in conjunction with the IMF, although the government will be more successful at resisting large-scale populist spending than in previous election years."

The report, however, did not mention any possible violence in the upcoming elections but noted that exercise will expose Ghana to notable risks, some of which will come from outside the country.

With the reports of corruption in the country's judiciary and the experiences in the 2012 election petition, the report suggests none of the parties will be interested in going to the Supreme Court to challenge the verdict of the election, a situation that has raised political tensions a notch higher.

Meanwhile, the representatives of the mentioned parties who spoke on Accra-based Class FM praised and criticised portions of the report.

Mustapha Hamid of the NPP has indicated that the party does not need a report by any unit to know that the NPP will win the upcoming elections looking at the response from electorates during their campaign tours nationwide.

"I have been involved in political campaigns since 2004 but have never seen this groundswell of support for the NPP," he said, adding, "this is the year the people of Ghana are ready to change course."

Koku Anyidoho, Deputy General Secretary of the governing NDC has described the report as unreliable.

He said the report which indicates that the ruling government has not done much in terms of resolving the economic hardship in the country also notes that the winning party will inherit a stable economy ready to take-off which he says does not make the report credible.

This is not the first time the Unit is predicting the outcome of elections in the country.

In February 2012, the unit predicted a win for the late President Prof. John Evans Mills who died in July.

He was however succeeded by John Dramani Mahama. Again, the unit said President Mahama was going to win the presidential elections in their November 2012 prediction.
