The vice presidential nominee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has indicated that an NPP government will take steps to abolish the taxation of female head porters, popularly known as kayayei.

He said it is very shameful and wrong for the country to impose taxes on girls who carry goods for a living when the country has failed to educate and provide them with meaningful jobs.

"Mismanagement of the economy in this John Mahama administration has increased taxes which is a disincentive to productive... We are going to move away from taxation to product by reducing the corporate tax rate from 25% to @0%," he said.
"We will abolish the 17.5% VAT on domestic airline tickets, introduce tax benefits for organisations that hire fresh graduates... We will abolish the taxes on kayayei in this country," Dr Bawumia noted.
Dr. Bawumia speaking on the solution to the economic crisis at the party's manifesto launch said, President Mahama and the NDC are in denial that the economy is in trouble.

"President Mahama’s tenure has been characterized with declining economic growth even with oil."
He chastised government for suggesting that International Credit rating agency, Moody’s recent ratings show an upgrade in the country’s economy.
“Moody's did not upgrade Ghana's rating, the rating is still B-, it's only the outlook that's been revised.”
