Police arrest military imposter

The Achimota Mile 7 Police Commander, Supt Iddrisu Tanko Issifu, said the police received a tip-off another car snatching incident which was being used to defraud.

The police have arrested a 40-year-old driver, Samuel Arthur for posing as a military officer to rob members of the public of their valuables.

He was arrested at Ofankor on Tuesday, fully dressed in military uniform while driving a KIA Soranto Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with registration number AW 9434-14, which the police said is a stolen vehicle.

Arthur is on police wanted list for allegedly orchestrating car snatching and robbery operations in Accra and Kumasi.

"We embarked on an operation on Monday night, which led to the arrest of the suspect around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. We found him wearing a military T-shirt, while a set of military uniform was also found on him," Sup Issifu told Daily Graphic.

According to the police, the suspect claimed the military uniform he wore belonged to his uncle who was a military officer with the 48 Engineers.

"In his confession, he told the police that he was not a soldier, but that he took the uniform from a 207 vehicle given to him by his uncle, a Staff Sergeant with the 48 Engineers at Teshie," Supt Iddrisu Tanko Issifu said.
