Majority Leader, Alban Bagbin is demanding that the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije must also be summoned before the House to offer explanations on the demolition of Old Fadama which has sparked anger among the residents.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament Tuesday, he argued that since the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is the body undertaking the exercise, it is only fair that its Chief Executive is made to directly answer questions on the decision to eject the residents.

“… We expect the authorities to be available like the Minister in charge of Local Government, the AMA Chief Executive and his directors to be available to hear from Parliament as to how these matters could be implemented,” he stressed.

Other members supported his call, compelling the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho to summon the the AMA boss before the House to offer an explanation. It is unclear yet when he will appear before the house but it is most likely to be this week.

Victims of last Saturday’s Sodom and Gomorrah demolition exercise took to the streets Monday morning to demonstrate against the Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA).

Hundreds of displaced residents clashed with police Monday as they illegally embarked on a demonstration to the State House demanding compensation and temporary shelter for their demolished structures.

The House have also demanded that Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Collins Dauda, appear before Parliament over the recent demolition of structures at Accra's Old Fadama.

However, Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Odododiodio constituency of the Greater Accra Region, have called on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly Chief Executive Officer, Alfred Oko Vanderpuiye to halt the ongoing demolition exercise in Sodom and Gomorrah.

The Odododiodio NDC executives said a failure on the part of the AMA Boss to heed to their advice would lead the NDC back to opposition.

A meeting between officials of AMA and Constituency executives were reported to have ended in a stalemate with the NDC executives furious about the whole exercise.
