Extended version of re-registration for NHIS registrants begins today

The extension will start on August 5 to August 12. It is to ensure that deleted NHIS registrants who did not re-register earlier will do so ahead of the December polls.

This will last for one week to ensure that deleted NHIS registrants will have their names recaptured on the voters' register ahead of the December polls.

Communications Director of the Commission, Eric Dzakpasu, had earlier indicated  at a press conference that “there is no evidence that when an extension is granted, the remaining people will come out of their houses or communities to get their name re-registered.”

However, following pleas by some opposition parties and other stakeholders for the exercise to be extended, the Electoral Commission has reconsidered its earlier decision.

After an IPAC meeting on Wednesday (August 3), the EC said, “We are giving the deleted NHIS registrants a second opportunity from 5th to 12th August 2016 to re-register. So if you were unable to do earlier you have a second opportunity to get yourself back onto the voters’ register.”

The Member of Parliament for the Efutu Constituency in the Central Region Alexander Afenyo Markin had earlier threatened to sue the Electoral Commission if it fails to extend the re-registration of NHIS registrants.

Afenyo Markin argues the Commission cannot use an administrative decision to deny people the opportunity to re-register.

Meanwhile, the EC has also set aside August 19 and 26, 2016 for a continuous registration exercise. According to the Commission, this will allow members of the general public who could not get their names on the register during the limited registration exercise or have recently turned 18 years to register.
