Ghanaian legend Abedi Pele honoured for his contribution to sports

The Maestro was handed the Sports Legend Award at the 2017 EMY Awards

Abedi Pele at the 2017 Exclusive Men of the Year Awards.

The awards ceremony was held at the Kempinski Gold Coast City Hotel in Accra to honour men who excelled in their various fields.

A host of gentlemen extraordinaire were presented with various awards for their impressive outputs in governance, health, sports, entertainment and many more.

Ghana legend, Abedi Pele was among those honoured on the night, with the former Black Stars captain walking away with the Sports Legend Award.

The man popularly referred to as ‘The Maestro’ was honoured for his numerous contributions to the growth of sports in Ghana.

Abedi Pele was a member of the Black Stars squad that won Ghana’s last Africa Cup of Nations title in 1982.

He also went on to enjoy a trophy-laden club career, leading French side Olympique Marseille to Champions League glory in 1993.

Abedi has also been briefly involved in coaching, and was the man in charge of Division One side Nania FC when the club upset the odds to defeat Asante Kotoko 2-1 in the final of the 2011 FA Cup.

The organizers of the EMY Awards, therefore, deemed it fit to honour him at the 2017 event.

Other notable winners on the night were Dr. Kwabena Duffuor and His Excellency John Agyekum Kuffuor, who were adjudged the Ultimate Man of the Year and Statesman Leadership Award winners respectively.

Renowned basketball promoter Yaw Sakyi Addo also beat of competition from Anthony Baffoe and Kwesi Nyantekyi to emerge Man of the Year in Sports.
