We look at the number of Ghanaians who have made their claim in the UEFA Champions League.

First African to win the UEFA Champions League- Abedi Pele

The former Black Stars captain won the Champions League in the 1992/1993 season for Olympique Marseille. Bruce Grobellar of Zimbabwe was the first African to win a European title with Liverpool but that was before the tournament was rebranded in 1992.

Abedi Pele was an integral part of the French side that win the maiden edition after the tournament was renamed in 1992. He won the title with great like Desailly and Didier Deschamps.

There was another African in the squad named François Omam- Biyik from Cameroon but he had 1 appearance for Olympique Marseille the whole season.

First African-born Player to win the UEFA Champions League- Marcel Desailly

The player of a Ghanaian decent was originally named Odenke Abbey. Later, His mum married a French diplomat and the mum’s husband adopted all her children and changed their names.

Desailly at the age of 4 was taken to France and started a youth career with French side Nantes FC. The journey saw him end up with longtime friend and current France National team coach Didier Deshamps at Olympique Marseille. Deschamps and Desailly won the 1992/1993 UEFA Champions League alongside Abedi Pele.

Desailly will go on to win the UEFA Champions League with AC Milan the next season.

Another African Born player in the squad was in the person of Basile Boli who has his roots in Cote d’Ivoire. Both Desailly and Boli pursued their football careers as French internationals.

Youngest Player to score in the UEFA Champions League- Peter Ofori Quaye

The Ghanaian veteran striker has his imprints in the UEFA champions League as he holds the record for being the youngest player to score in the UEFA Champions League. Ofori Quaye scored in the 1997/1998 edition of the UEFA Champions League.

He was old as 17 years and 195 days old when he scored for Olympiakos against Rosenborg.

Most African Champions League winners by country-Ghana

A remarkable feat by Ghana is that they have produced the most players to win the most coveted European trophy.

Ghana has four different talents to have annexed the most prestigious club trophy in Europe.

The players are namely Abedi Pele (1992/1993), Sammy Kuffuor (2000/2001), Sulley Muntari(2009/2010) and Micheal Essien (2011/2012) .
