Jessica Ennis-Hill retires from athletics

Former Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill has retired from athletics at the age of 30.

Ennis-Hill hinted that she may call time on her career after she had to settle for a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in August.

The Brit confirmed her retirement on Thursday, ending a stellar career in which she won Olympic gold on home soil in London four years ago as well as two world titles in the multi-discipline event.

She revealed in an Instagram post: "Amazing memories...from my first world title in Berlin 2009 to Rio 2016 I'm so fortunate to have had such an amazing career within the sport I love and this has been one of the toughest decisions I've had to make.

"But I know that retiring now is right. I've always said I want to leave my sport on a high and have no regrets and I can truly say that.

"I want to thank my family and incredible team who have spent so much of their time supporting me and enabling me to achieve my dreams.

"Also a huge thank you to all those people who have supported and followed my career over the years."

Ennis-Hill won her second world title last year just 13 months after giving birth to her first child, Reggie, and also topped the podium at the European Championships in 2010.

She took silver at the 2011 World Championships having won that title for the first time in 2009.

British Olympic Association chairman Sebastian Coe said: "Jess has been one of the leading lights of British athletics for a decade and it has been a pleasure to watch her showcase her world class ability on the greatest of stages throughout that time.

"That night of Super Saturday [when she won gold] during London 2012 is something that many, including myself, will never forget and will undoubtedly be our lasting memory of Jess in what has been a phenomenally successful career.

"At times she has carried the expectations of a nation and always did so with grace and a smile. She can be incredibly proud of what she has achieved and retires as one of the finest track and field stars Britain has ever seen."
