Robin Smith's 23-year ODI record score could be under threat, with Jason Roy confident he can eclipse 167 after latest hundred.

Jason Roy has his sights set on eclipsing Robin Smith's England one-day international batting record after his blistering knock against Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

The opener smashed 162 at The Oval as England sealed the five-match series with one game to play, the hosts successfully chasing the 308 runs they needed to win by six wickets on the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Roy's stunning innings included 13 boundaries and three maximums, and comes five days after making 112 not out at Edgbaston to give England their first win of the series.

And the 25-year-old believes he can reproduce that form in the future, with Smith's 167 – set against Australia in 1993 – an achievable target.

"Someone can break that record, 100 per cent," said Roy, who was unaware he was so close to the mark before being bowled by Nuwan Pradeep. "We saw that at Edgbaston and here today.

"It was a great pitch at The Oval, just a remarkable evening. I didn't know I was approaching the record score, but I just want to keep performing in big games with this team.

"The boys let me enjoy myself and play how I want to play. I don't worry if I get out in the first over because I know the boys are backing me. It's an incredible dressing room to be part of at the moment."
