Lindsey Vonn has signalled her intention to race against the men in the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup.

The American – who has a record 76 wins across all disciplines – became the most successful downhill racer with 38 victories and claimed an eighth globe in the discipline, another first.

A knee injury in Soldeu-El Tarter ended her season prematurely but Vonn is well on the road to recovery ahead of the 2016-17 World Cup.

Vonn intends to keep racing well into 2018, but has set herself a challenge of racing against the men when her final season in the sport arrives.

"In my final season I would like to race against the men in one race," she told ESPN.

"This is a secret; you got some really good info there. I haven't told anyone that yet. That's my goal.

"We've started the process of trying to figure out how that can be accomplished, and it's gonna be definitely a hard thing to get done with all the ski federations and everything involved.

"My final hurrah: Beat some boys and then call it a day."

Exactly when that will be remains to be seen, though, with Vonn desperate to grow her legend within the sport with more triumphs in the women's disciplines first.

She added: "I just want to win. I've accomplished a lot, but I still feel like there's a lot left that I have to achieve. I may be getting older, but I'm also wiser.

"At this point, it's a matter of staying healthy and keeping my body in relatively good shape as far as health goes.

"Mentally, I’m just as fired up as I ever have been."
