Asante Akyem North witnessed its first ever marathon organised by former member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Kwadwo Baah Agyemang
Amponsah a product of the Swedru Senior High School had caused a major upset at the GAA Circuit in Accra last month by finishing second and had also won the Kwawu Marathon on Friday, before adding the Asante Akyem Marathon to his list of honours.
While in the women's event, Precious Nyaba from Kumasi Buokrom JHS made 1hr 31mins 15esc to come first.
The Asante Akyem marathon which saw athletes cover a distance of 20 kilometres at the Collins Park at Agogo, the capital of the constituency witnessed both amateur and professionals athletes, totalling five thousand come face to face for the prize.
Hon Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, the organiser of the marathon in an interview with Space FM (Tarkwa) said the event was put in place to unearth more talents for the nation in the area of athletics and to also encourage the youth to get involved in excercises.
The former MP of the area announced that the prize for the winner is a London-Accra ticket to participate in the upcoming London marathon.
A package was also announced for the runner up of the marathon, whereas the first to tenth placed will have the honour to participate in the national Milo marathon.
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon Isaac Asiamah and other dignitaries graced the event to make it colourful.
