Hammond died at age 67 in his base in the US on Tuesday morning.

He was an influential figure at Hearts of Oak especially in the 1970's. Robert Hammond was key member of the Hearts of Oak's fearsome five, comprising Mahama Acquah, Peter Lamptey,  Mohammed Polo and Anas Seidu. They tormented their opposing sides especially their bitterest rivals, Asante Kotoko.

It was during that period that the Phobians won several league titles in the 1970  and reached the CAF Champions League on two occasions.
