The Spanish third seed has struggled since winning the French Open and that continued with a 7-5 6-4 defeat to the Latvian on Wednesday.

A total of 38 unforced errors proved her undoing at Arthur Ashe Stadium as her form slump rolled on.

Muguruza seemed to be getting into some form and reached the semi-finals at the Western and Southern Open in the lead-up to the year's last grand slam.

She led 4-2 during the first set against Sevastova and served for it in the 10th game, only to drop three straight.

Sevastova went 4-0 up in the second before nerves kicked in, only to break the Muguruza serve to seal victory and a third-round meeting with Kateryna Bondarenko.

In four appearances at Flushing Meadows, Muguruza has never been beyond the second round.

For world number 48 Sevastova, it marks just the second time she has reached the third round of a grand slam, having achieved the feat at the 2011 Australian Open.
