Police arrest 10 miners in 'Yere bre' demo

The miners were arrested for an alleged misconduct.

Police in the Ashanti region have arrested 10 small-scale miners who staged a demonstration in Kumasi to protest a temporary ban on their activities.

Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Juliana Obeng at a press briefing on Tuesday said the miners were arrested for an alleged misconduct.

She said that five of them were arrested after the police received intelligence that some individuals who were not members of the Small Scale Miners Association had joined the demonstrators to cause mayhem.

She said the police also retrieved items like cutlasses, hammers, and other deadly materials from the five people who were also in the small-scale miners’ clothes.

The other five were, however, arrested at the Gyamfuah Park at Asokwah where they gathered for an alleged misconduct.

Meanwhile, the police have invited the leaders of the demonstration for questioning after they ignored an order to stop the demonstration.

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander COP Ken Yeboah had earlier directed the small scale miners to call off their demonstration since the police do not have enough men to protect the expected number of protestors.
