21 Savage, whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was arrested during an operation by federal and local law enforcement authorities in Atlanta, ICE said in a statement, WSB-TV in Atlanta reported.
The statement said Abraham-Joseph was an âunlawfully present United Kingdom nationalâ who legally entered the United States in 2005 but was supposed to leave the next year, according to the terms of his nonimmigrant visa, officials said.
In addition to being in the country unlawfully after 2006, Abraham-Joseph was convicted on felony drug charges in 2014 in Fulton County, Georgia, the statement said.
Abraham-Joseph faces deportation proceedings and is expected to appear before a federal immigration judge. Neither his lawyer, Dina LaPolt, nor a spokesman for ICE could be immediately reached for comment Sunday.
His arrest comes after he performed at the Super Bowl Music Fest at the State Farm Arena on Thursday.
Abraham-Joseph is up for a record of the year Grammy on Feb. 10 for âRockstar,â a song with rapper Post Malone. Abraham-Josephâs album âI Am > I Wasâ opened at No. 1 on Billboardâs latest album chart in December. He is known for his flat delivery and subdued rap style.
