The 33-year-old has had an interesting career so far, having scored lots of goals and also courted a lot of controversy in the process.

In the last two weeks, he has been the most talked about Black Stars player following his premature retirement and subsequent U-turn.

As we countdown to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, Pulse Sports profiles the Ghana striker.

Asamoah Gyan is undoubtedly the greatest striker ever to play for the Black Stars. Despite never winning anything with Ghana, the 33-year-old is adored by his countrymen.

It is also fair to say that the Kayserispor striker has been the standout Ghanaian player in the last decade.

Gyan started his career with local club Liberty Professionals. Despite failing to score a single goal for the Dansoman-based club in the Ghana Premier League, he still earned a contract to play for Udinese.

The striker’s transfer to Udinese was massive, but he couldn’t nail down a place, hence being sent on a two-year loan spell at Serie B side Modena.

He ended up scoring 15 goals in 53 appearances for Modena, with his performances ensuring he was named in Ghana’s squad for the 2006 World Cup.

Gyan made his international debut at age 17, but by 20 he was already starting for the Black Stars at the World Cup.

He went on to become the first Ghanaian player to score at the World Cup after netting the opening goal in Ghana’s 2-0 win over Czech Republic.

Gyan played for two more years at Udinese before joining Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes in the summer of 2008. The Ghanaian’s biggest move came in 2010 when he joined Premier League side Sunderland after a memorable performance at the World Cup in South Africa.

Despite the buzz surrounding the move, the striker played in the Premier League for just a year and half, before making a big money move to Al Ain in the UAE.

The 33-year-old has since featured for Shanghai SIPG, Al Ahli Dubai and currently plies his trade at Turkish side Kayserispor.

Gyan was blighted by a series of injuries in the just ended season, but still managed five goals in 17 appearances.

As he prepares to play in his seventh AFCON tournament, Gyan is well aware of the fact that it could be his very last.

With age not on his side, the striker is the last of a talented generation that has so far failed to lead Ghana to trophy success.

But while Gyan has been stripped off the Black Stars captaincy – the striker is now the General Captain of the team – he knows very well that this is his last opportunity to bow out of international football with a trophy.
