<h1>Several film productions have come out of Nollywood but 1992 classic, 'Living in Bondage' stands out as a connecting dot to what eventually became one of the pride of the African film industry.</h1>

The emergence of what is now called Nollywood - one of the biggest and acknowledged film industries around the world - cannot be discussed without the mention of the 1992 hit flick,<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/living-in-bondage-breaking-free-is-a-perfect-sequel-after-27-years-review/km8fv24"> 'Living in Bondage'</a>.

The Nigerian film industry can be dated back to 1926 with Geoffrey Barkas' feature, 'Palaver,' which is the first feature film with Nigerian actors in a speaking role. The likes of Ola Balogun also made flicks in the 1970s that conveyed the stories of Nigeria of that time.

Subsequently, filmmakers strived to produce films for cinemas and celluloid all through the 90s when a landmark achievement was made with the berth of a united front which would be widely referred to as Nollywood.&nbsp;

But before the defining era-late 90s and early 2000s- of Nollywood, it was the novelty of the ideas, the execution of the film and subsequent success of Chris Obi Rapu directed ‘Living in Bondage’ that laid the path that the Nigerian cinematic output would follow to massive outbreak.&nbsp;

Okechukwu Okey Ogunjiofor, a creative had developed a wonderful story fit for production but was without funding, so he partnered with Kenneth Nnebue, a businessman, who imported VHS tapes from Taiwan. Making films with VHS camcorders was an inferior format to that which was obtainable in Hollywood but it was an alternative method that would change the course of filmmaking in Nigeria.&nbsp;

With Rupu as director, ‘Living in Bondage’ tells the story of a man who joins a cult in a desperate search for money and power. For ritual sacrifice, the cult leads him to murder his wife whose ghost haunts him throughout his short-lived riches. It’s a fright flick that uses supernatural plots in a way that Nigerians are familiar with.

Although the dialogue is predominantly in Igbo, ‘Living in Bondage’ was an instant cross-cultural success, the first of it’s kind to be in Nigeria.&nbsp;

"When we did 'Living in Bondage', it was a story told in a professional way despite the obvious fact that the quality of the production might be low but it was well accepted because of the language and it went on to become a cross-cultural movie so much that people who couldn't understand or speak the language understood the story because pictures tell stories,” Ogunjiofor told NollywoodDK.&nbsp;

“It was a massive revolution in filmmaking and became phenomenal and a turning point for the Nigerian movie industry.”

The direct-to-video release of the film was key in its success and it soon became the channel of distribution that turned the Nigerian film industry into a wide-reaching output.&nbsp;

“It came out so resoundingly well that it sustained the temple of the industry for 27 years,” Kenneth Okonkwo who played the lead role as Andy Okeke told Pulse.&nbsp;

As many others adopted the straight to VHS tapes format, Nnebue continued to enjoy dominance with his production outfit, NEK Links.

For NEK Links, Some of the most popular and most lucrative home video films ever made in Nigeria followed after ‘Living in Bondage’. 'Glamour Girls', 'The Maid', 'True Confession', 'Lost To Lust', 'Most Wanted’, 'Sakobi,’ and 'Isakaba' are all regarded as Nollywood classics.&nbsp;

Nollywood has seen steady growth over the years with several other changes including the format of release. In recent years, some of the biggest flicks out of Nollywood have been released first on cinema, including ‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free’ the sequel to the 1992 classic.&nbsp;

In August 2015, Charles Okpaleke acquired the rights to ‘Living in Bondage’ for 10 years under his production company PlayNetwork. He began the journey to what will become one of the biggest sequels in the Nigerian film industry.

Okpaleke paired up with Steve Gukas, a brilliant producer and brought sparkling actor, Ramsey Nouah on board. Fresh off his training as a filmmaker, <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/living-in-bondage-sequel-makes-n25m-in-first-weekend/hfl7p6x">‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free’</a> would be Nouah’s directorial debut.&nbsp;

"I could not have asked for a bigger platform on which to make my directorial debut,” the Nollywood veteran told Pulse.&nbsp;

Though Seyi’s friendship with Tacha didn’t last for long after they both left the ‘Secret Room’, viewers of the BBNaija 2019 were hoping something could happen between the ex-housemates.

In a brief chat with Pulse, Adesewa tries to mirror some of the characteristics which Seyi might have seen in Tacha to have told Venita that the ex-housemate possesses some qualities like her.

She said, “I can’t really say what he saw in Tacha for him to say he saw some of my qualities in her but maybe because she’s a strong person and I’m a strong woman as well and she’s resilient, if she sees something and she wants it, she goes for it.

“She’s (Tacha) confident, so that’s probably the things he saw that made him say those things he said. Again, I didn’t watch so I can’t say this is exactly what he saw but based on the few videos that I have watched, I can say she’s a strong person and maybe that’s the reason.”

Continuing, Adesewa denied ever getting threatened at some point when Seyi got close to Tacha during the show.

She said, “I was not threatened at all despite his closeness to Tacha because I know Seyi. he’s a very nice person. If he sees someone in need or he sees someone down or needs a little bit of love, irrespective, he will give it, so I wasn’t threatened or worried because I saw him offering and lending a hand of friendship to her and that’s all I saw it as but Nigerians, people will put things together but I didn’t let that get to me.”

Adesewa also disclosed that even though she was a bit skeptical about giving Seyi her consent at first, she reconsidered and decided to let him participate after they both talked about it.

She said, “Initially, I was a bit skeptical due to the negative stigma the show has but I spoke to my mum about it, I spoke to him about it and he just made realise it’s what he wants to do and I just had to support him because there is no point holding him back and end up regretting not going or I would end up regretting not trusting him enough to let him go.”

Knowing Seyi for over four years, Adesewa revealed that she gave him the necklace he wore throughout his 99-days stay in the house to keep reminding him of her.

“I gave him a necklace when he was going in and he always kept it on so whenever I see the necklace, it is a reminder that whatever I read or see, he’s still my Seyi, he’s still faithful, he still remembers me and that is all that matters to me. It got to me a bit but the reminder he gave me was well enough,” Adesewa disclosed.

The young lady, who says God’s time is when she will walk down the aisle with Seyi, further noted that she missed Seyi just as much as he missed her while in the house and as each week passed, she looked forward to seeing him. She also acknowledged that he made her and the entire family proud.

Nigeria has again lost the chance to claim an Oscar as ‘Black Panther,’ which features Sope Aluko, lost the ‘Best Picture’ category award to ‘Green Book’.

The movie, which stars Genevieve Nnaji alongside Onyeka Onwenu, Peter Okoye, Nkem Owoh and Pete Edochie amongst others, will be premiered two days after the 2018 TIFF kicked off in Toronto, Canada.

"Lionheart," Genevieve Nnaji's directorial debut, had been billed to have its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.

"Lionheart" stars Genevieve Nnaji, Chika Okpala, Steve Eboh, Pete Edochie, <a href="" id="4a4ade83-aa26-5412-8e5c-2269a2f252a5">Kanayo O Kanayo, Onyeka Onwenu, Nkem Owoh</a>, Kalu Ikeagwu, Jemima Osunde, Yakubu Mohammed and Sani Muazu.

The movie also stars Nigerian rapper and singer, Phyno and Peter Okoye.

'Lion Heart,' which serves as Genevieve's directorial debut, will be shown five times during the Toronto International Film Festival.

According to Citizen TV, the man, who is a citizen of Kenya, has been identified as David Mungai.

The alleged abusive husband reportedly fled the couple's home after <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/gist/metro/article8499170.ece" id="6fdd6a94-6640-5313-82f8-b65e20610154">inflicting the injury</a> on his wife, who was identified as Anne Waireri, on August 29, 2018.

However, Mungai ran out of luck when his neighbours discovered his hiding place and forced him to report himself at the police station.

She also said that not all Nollywood movies should be in cinemas, advising <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/article8086941.ece" id="3bf4a536-d34a-5579-a2ff-9ff157489339">filmmakers</a> to ensure that the quality of their work matches the hype they create for it.

In a statement, which was exclusively gotten by Pulse, the Nigerian actress and producer join top Hollywood stars and world movie practitioners on the long list of expected guests at the 43rd annual Toronto International Film Festival.

Genevieve will be leading other members of her 'Lion Heart' cast including Nkem Owoh, Onyeka Onwenu to the 2018 TIFF as the movie premiere during 10-days long the film festival.

The Nigerian stars will be joining renowned movie practitioners that include Danny Glover, Ryan Gooslin, Quincy Jones, Steve McQueen at the film festival.

Other notable international stars expected at the 2018 TIFF include <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/article7446670.ece" id="3292f0bf-ce22-506f-8201-c567eece5ee5">Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje</a>, Kate Beckinsale, Julia Roberts, Eric Cantona, Hugh Jackman and Lady Gaga.

Scheduled to take place between September 6, 2018, and September 16, 2018, at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, Toronto, Canada, the 2018 TIFF will host the premieres of two movies which starred Nigerian actress, Genevieve Nnaji.

Genevieve will be at the premiere of<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/article7446670.ece" id="e78ea03e-4b16-505f-ac46-33022241d467"> Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje's 'Farming'</a> as well as her own co-produced movie, 'Lion Heart.'

This won't be the first time Genevieve and Onyeka will be attending the TIFF as expected guests as they were both guests at the premiere of Half of a Yellow Sun in 2013.

Hongmei discovered that the 24-year-old wife was still a virgin despite being married and having sex with her 26-year-old husband for four years.

“The couple were very young, the man 26 and the woman 24. They were very healthy, but, despite being married for four years, couldn’t conceive. Their family was giving them a lot of stress because of it,” Hongmei said.
