Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa has been projected to rise to 3.1% in 2018 and to 3.5% in 2019, from 2.6% in 2017, as the recovery gradually strengthens in the largest economies.

The World Bank stated this in its “Global Economic Prospects report”, released on Tuesday, June 6, 2018, for Sub-Saharan Africa.

The bank said a modest economic recovery has continued in Sub-Saharan Africa, supported by rising oil and metals production spurred by higher commodity prices, by improving agricultural conditions and by increasing domestic demand.

The report further stated that several countries, including Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria, experienced a pickup in manufacturing activity, while renewed government commitments to macroeconomic and governance reforms have boosted investor and consumer confidence in Angola, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

“Elsewhere, including in Kenya and The Gambia, consumer spending has risen, helped by low inflation and a rebound in remittances.”

Nigeria is anticipated to grow by 2.1% this year, as non-oil sector growth remains subdued due to low investment, and at a 2.2% pace next year.

Angola is expected to grow by 1.7% in 2018 and 2.2% in 2019, reflecting an increased availability of foreign exchange due to higher oil prices, rising natural gas production, and improved business sentiment.

South Africa is forecast to expand 1.4% in 2018 and 1.8% in 2019 as a pickup in business and consumer confidence supports stronger growth in investment and consumption expenditures.

The bank also said rising mining output and stable metals prices are anticipated to boost activity in metals exporters while growth in non-resource-intensive countries is expected to remain robust, supported by improving agricultural conditions and infrastructure investment.

“But growth alone won’t be enough to address pockets of extreme poverty in other parts of the world. Policymakers need to focus on ways to support growth over the longer run, by boosting productivity and labour force participation to accelerate progress toward ending poverty and boosting shared prosperity,” the World Bank Group President, Jim Yong Kim, said.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Rising mining output and stable metals prices are anticipated to boost activity in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is projected to grow 3.8% in 2018 and 4.1% in 2019.

But the Ebola outbreak could slow growth in the DRC and the sub-region if it spreads faster than anticipated in major urban centres and into neighbouring countries.

Zambia economy is expected to advance 4.1% this year and 4.5% next year.

Growth in Ghana is forecast to moderate from 6.9%in 2018 to 6.7% in 2019 as the effects of high oil production dissipate.

Economic activity is expected to remain robust in non-resource-intensive economies, such as Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia, supported by improving agricultural conditions, infrastructure investment, and household demand.

The bank also warned in its June 2018 Global Economic Prospects that risks remain tilted to the downside, faster-than-expected tightening of monetary policy in advanced economies could dampen investor appetite for higher risk assets in frontier markets.

World Bank economic forecasts are frequently updated based on new information and changing (global) circumstances.

The report stated that countries like Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria, experienced a pickup in manufacturing activity, while renewed government commitments to macroeconomic and governance reforms have boosted investor and consumer confidence in Angola, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

The 2018 edition of Global Peace Index (GPI) released on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, placed Nigeria on 148 out of 168 countries to rank the16th least peaceful country in the world

The report produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), said the global level of peace has deteriorated by 0.27% in the last year, marking the fourth successive year of deterioration.

It also said the world is “less peaceful today than at any time in the last decade”.

The largest regional improvements were in terrorism impact, perceptions of criminality, violent crime, neighbouring countries relations, and militarisation, but those were offset by deteriorations in violent demonstrations, refugees and IDPs and political terror.

According to the 2018 edition of Global Peace Index (GPI), six of the top seven improvers were in West Africa, including the Gambia, which scored the world’s largest improvement after <a id="a1832f1d-3c47-5a28-81a9-6214a9281df2" href="http://www.pulse.ng/news/world/yahya-jammeh-the-real-and-imagined-crimes-of-gambias-former-president-id6213989.html">Yahya Jammeh</a> was voted out of power at the end of 2016.

Of the 14 West African nations, the overall scores of only two – Niger and Nigeria – deteriorated last year.

There were substantial sub-regional improvements in the domain of Safety and Security, including Liberia by 8%, the Gambia by 5.9% and Ghana by 5.5%

The most notable West African exceptions were Togo and Cameroon.

Togo is the region’s second largest deterioration, tens of thousands of people took to the streets to demand the resignation of President Faure Gnassingbé, whose family have ruled the country for 50 years.

“The Lake Chad basin region continues to have problems with Boko Haram and a humanitarian crisis brought on by prolonged drought,”, the report says.

“Boko Haram’s geographic reach shrank in 2017, leading to a reduction in the impact of terrorism in the groups’ principal areas of operations in although they still remain a threat.”

<h1>The billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote, says he wants to become the biggest philanthropist in Africa, asides being the continents richest man.</h1>

He said the motivation gave birth to Aliko Dangote Foundation, on whose platform a total of N2.5bn had been disbursed to 256,500 women across Kano, Lagos, Jigawa, Kogi, Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

“I do not only want to be known as Africa’s richest man but the biggest philanthropist. I will continue to use my resources and my voice to help shape a better Nigeria, and Africa as a whole,” the businessman said.

“One-off and unconditional micro-grants” programme

The Aliko Dangote Foundation flagged off its one-off and unconditional micro-grants programme in Niger State with 25,000 disadvantaged women as beneficiaries bringing the total number of women beneficiaries to 256,500 across seven states of the federation.

Dangote at the inauguration of the foundation’s “one-off and unconditional micro-grants” programme held at the Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre, Minna, Niger State, said the scheme targets 25,000 disadvantaged and vulnerable women in Niger State, who will each be given N10,000 cash “to boost their household income generation.”

He said his foundation had earmarked N10bn for the empowerment of vulnerable women in the 774 local government areas of the country.

The Foundation’s Executive Director and daughter to the Chairman, Hajiya Halima Aliko Dangote, said the Foundation was poised to help lift the status of womanhood in the country, adding: “If you empower a woman, you empower the whole nation.”

She stated that women have always bear the brunt of the harsh economic reality in the country and the Aliko Dangote Foundation reasoned that they should be the target of such critical intervention as the disbursement with the hope that the benefits will cascade down the family line with women as the maker of the home and improve the family wellbeing.

Meanwhile, the Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote will meet other billionaires at the <a id="c9650977-2186-5198-9b67-5cac101678dc" href="http://www.pulse.ng/bi/finance/dangote-gates-otedola-will-join-bloomberg-s-ceo-in-beijing-id8400201.html">New Economy Forum</a> in November 2018.

The New Economy Forum is scheduled to hold between November 6, 2018, and November 8, 2018, in Beijing.

<h1>The country manager and managing director of Dangote Industries Plc, Ethiopia, Deep Kamra, has been reportedly shot dead by unknown gunmen, in Inchini, a local area near the companys cement factory in the Oromia region, Ethiopia.</h1>

Local newspapers quoted company sources saying Aliko Dangote, the owner of Dangote Cement and the richest man in Africa is expected to arrive in Addis Ababa on Thursday, May 17, 2018.

Kamra and two more Ethiopians, a driver and a secretary, were shot dead in the restive city of Oromia on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, local sources told .

“Our community is devastated; Oboo Gallatta (a local name given to Kamra) was like a father to many of us,” a source who preferred to remain anonymous told Ethiopia newspaper.

Security forces are currently pursuing the assailants.

Few years after, the company and the country's local administration  - Oromia state’s East Shewa Zone – had argued over taking control of some of the cement making business in the region. The issue almost caused Dangote to shut its operations in Ethiopia in 2017.

The zone administration believed that if the company outsource its pumice, sand and clay mines to youth groups it will ease unemployment and quell unrest in the country.

<h1>A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday adjourned till Jan. 19, the trial of a 53-year-old -farmer, Yesiru Onajobi, facing charges of incest.</h1>

Onajobi is being prosecuted by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and other Related Matters.

The resident of Bogije Street, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count of unlawful carnal knowledge of his teenage daughter.

The case, which was billed for continuation of trial on Tuesday, was adjourned to Jan. 19 as the court did not sit.

The accused was re-arraigned on July 8, 2013, before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, following the transfer of the first trial judge, Justice Barbara Molokwu from the Lagos Division of the court.

He had pleaded not guilty to the charge, and Aneke  remanded him at the Ikoyi Prisons pending determination of his bail application.

Following Aneke’s transfer from Lagos Division, Justice Muslim Hassan now presides over the matter.

In the charge, the accused was alleged to have committed the offence in 2010.

The prosecution had told the court that after the death of his wife, the accused sexually assaulted his only daughter several times.

It stated that the accused intimidated and repeatedly had forceful carnal knowledge of his daughter, who eventually became pregnant for him.

According to the prosecution, the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 13 (1) and 18 (a) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement Act, 2003.

The accused is being prosecuted by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and other Related Matters.

Court to continue incest trial of farmer January 19

<h1>A Mararaba Upper Area Court, on Tuesday, sentenced a 37-year-old labourer, Adamu Husseini, to 18 months in prison for stealing an electric generator set.</h1>

The Judge, Mr Ibrahim Shekaru, sentenced Husseini after he pleaded guilty to a two-count-charge of house breaking and stealing.

Shekaru said that he sentenced the convict to nine months imprisonment for each count, however, he granted him seven thousand naira fine on each count.

He said the sentence was meant to serve as a deterrent to those who might want to engage in similar act.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Donald Herman, told the court that one Blessing Audu and one Caroline Albert reported the matter at the Calvary Road Police Station on Dec. 19.

Herman said the accused broke into the complainants’ shop at the back of their house and stole their tiger electric generator, valued six thousand naira.

“He also stole different brands of beer from the shop all valued N22,000,’’ he added

The accused, who resides in Kabayi area of Mararaba, had urged the court to tender justice with mercy.

“Have mercy on me, I will not do it again,’’ he pleaded.

The accused was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to a two-count-charge of house breaking and stealing.

Labourer bags 18 months imprisonment for stealing

<h1>The Chief Judge of Ekiti ,Justice Ayo Daramola on Friday freed 32 inmates awaiting trial inmates in Ado-Ekiti Prisons.</h1>

Daramola said that the inmates were released in<a href="http://newsroom.nan.ng/32-awaiting-trial-inmates-freed-in-ekiti/#54582563" id="3d8ea942-3d50-584c-8551-366afcba6f22"> </a>order to decongest the prison, adding that some had no case to answer, while some were released based on their age, and long stay in custody.

Daramola advised the inmates who were released to go and sin no more.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there are 296 inmates awaiting trial at the Ado-Ekiti Prisons.

The State Comptroller of Prisons, Mr Mustapha Mohammed who spoke, said it was not appropriate to keep inmates awaiting trial for long except on capital offences.

One of the inmates, Tosin Ajayi,<a href="http://newsroom.nan.ng/32-awaiting-trial-inmates-freed-in-ekiti/#7277252" id="0bdee0ad-3e57-5835-88c3-e88d55582cea"> </a>thanked the chief judge and promised to turn a new leaf.

32 prison inmates awaiting trial granted freedom

<h1>A 35-year-old man, Jamilu Adamu, was on Wednesday electrocuted at Kawon Maigari, Hotoro Area of Kano, Kano State,  while trying to vandalise a fenced-electricity transformer.</h1>

The Public Relations Officer of Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Mohammed Kandi, confirmed this in a statement he released to newsmen on Thursday in Kano.

KEDCO spokesman said that the deceased was found dead with some tools that include: Sizes 17 and 20 rings and flat spanner by his side.

The statement also quoted Mr Aminu Abubakar, Head of Health Safety and Environment (HSE) of KEDCO as saying that the vandal’s corpse had been evacuated by the police.

“At the time the police evacuated the corpse, one of the HV bushings of the transformer had been loosened from the base.

“This is an indication that the intention of the deceased was to vandalise the transformer by removing the bushings, and possibly the armoured cable,’’ he said in the statement.

Abubakar said in the statement that the deceased was seen loitering around the substation area three days before the incident.

“When he was approached, he told residents that he was there to visit his relative,’’ he said.

35-year-old transformer vandal electrocuted

<h1>A Gudu Upper Area Court on Thursday in Abuja sentenced one Nasiru Bala to eight months imprisonment and seven strokes of the cane for car theft.</h1>

Bala, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty and was convicted on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.

The Upper Area Court judge, Mr Umar Kagarko did not give the convict any option of fine.

He said instead, “this should serve as a deterrent to habitual criminals.’’

The prosecutor, Mr Donatus Agba had told the court that one Isah Isyaku reported the matter at Garki police station on Nov.25.

Agba said that the complainant had parked his Honda Civic car, with reg.no MB 212 outside the premises of Diamond bank, Area 3, Garki.

“When he came out of the bank where he went for a transaction, he discovered that the convict had  stolen the vehicle from where it was parked.

“He was arrested while driving the car away, and he admitted to the crime,’’ Agba said.

He also said that the convict said he had stolen other five vehicles within Area 3, Garki a month earlier, and sold them to one Kabiru Ibrahim– now at large.

“The vehicles are yet to be recovered,’’ Agba said.

He further disclosed that the keys of  Toyota and Honda car were recovered from the convict.

The prosecutor said that the offence was contrary to Sections 346 and 288 of the Penal Code.

The accused pleaded guilty and was convicted on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.

31-year-old gets 8 months imprisonment

<h1>An Evbouriaria Magistrates’ Court, Benin City, on Thursday sentenced one Sylvester Livinus, 22, to four months imprisonment for stealing 10 cat fish.</h1>

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs C.E. Oghuma, however, gave the convict N5,000 option of fine.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Olatoye Oluwaseun, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 18, at about 2:45p.m. at No. 1, Toronto St. Benin.

Oluwaseun said that the cat fish which belonged to one Noma Okunbor, was valued at  N10, 000.

He said the offence contravened Section 309 (9) of the Criminal Code.

The 22-year-old convict was also given a N5,000 option of fine.

Man bags 4 months imprisonment for stealing 10 cat fish

<h1>A 46-year-old teacher, Adenekan Adegboyega, has been arrested by the police in Lagos State for allegedly defiling a two-year-old girl [names withheld].</h1>

The supervising teacher in one of the popular and privately-run schools in Lagos State was alleged to have defiled the little girl under the guise of teaching her sex education.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr Fatai Owoseni, who confirmed the arrest to newsmen on Wednesday, said the suspect was later arrested following a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother at the Ikeja Police Division.

He said that preliminary investigation revealed that the teacher allegedly defiled the girl, stressing that the suspect would be charged to court soon.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the briefing, the suspect said that he got a phone call from the pupil’s mother accusing him of defiling her daughter.

The suspect said he wondered where and when he committed such a crime, denying ever doing such with the baby girl.

"The mother of the pupil told me that she wanted what transpired between me and her daughter to end.

"She said she did not want any other person to hear about the incident, that even the girl’s father was not aware.

"When the mother of the pupil dropped her call, I was disturbed in my spirit and asked myself where the devil was coming from.

"Few minutes later, she sent a text message to me, telling me to remain firm with her daughter, because her daughter respected me like her father," he said.

The teacher, who claimed to be a pastor in a Pentecostal church, denied doing such a thing with the minor.

"Before God almighty, I know nothing about the allegation levelled against me by the mother of the minor.

"I want to implore the Nigerian Police to do a thorough investigation.

"I am ready to surrender myself, but I know the God almighty that I serve will vindicate me because this is a serious challenge for me.

"The allegation that I was teaching the girl sex education is not true, because I had never taught in the school. I only supervise and walk round to make sure everything went well," he said.

The mother of the abused girl, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the daughter told her that someone put his 'wiwi' (penis) into her 'wiwi' (private part).

"I asked her who the person was; my daughter then mentioned Mr Adenekan’s name saying he did it inside his office toilet.

"Truly, she is two years old but she could describe things vividly.

"After my daughter explained everything to me, I got the teacher’s phone number from the school and called him.

"Initially, I did not want the issue to go out because of the stigma it would bring against my daughter in the school.

"Thereafter, I confronted the teacher not to threaten my daughter again and it was then he said I could go to anywhere to report.

"He said nobody would believe me, that even if I told the management of the school, they would not believe me," she said.

The girl’s mother further said that Adenekan had no reason to be at the nursery section of the school, because he only supervises the primary section.

“When I took my daughter to Mirabel Centre in Ikeja, it was revealed that she had been abused."

46-year-old teacher arrested for allegedly defiling 2-year-old pupil

<h1>A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced a 28-year-old bricklayer, Nurudeen Olakunle, to five years imprisonment for dealing in 1kg of hemp.</h1>

Justice Babs Kuewumi sentenced Olakunle, without giving him an option of fine, after he pleaded guilty to a charge of drug trafficking.

“The accused is found guilty of the charge before this honourable court, and is hereby convicted.

“He is accordingly, sentenced to a term of five years, beginning from the date of his arrest.

“The drug is to be destroyed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), if there is no appeal against this judgment,” he said.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, reviewed the facts of the case and tendered several documents and the hemp as exhibits.

Aernan submitted to the court a written statement of the accused, a scientific aid form, a forensic analysis form and the hemp.

He urged the court to sentence the accused based on evidence before it.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict was first arraigned on July 25.

Aernan had told the court that Olakunle committed the offence on June 6, at Mazamaza area of Lagos State.

He said the accused was arrested on a tip off and the 1kg of hemp was found in his possession.

“Hemp is categorised by the agency as a banned narcotic,’’ he said.

The offence contravened Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation 2004.
