<h1>A lot of people have always had doubts about the artistic ability of</h1>

It’s happened, and everyone has quickly moved to solo careers, displaying what they brought to the table, to create Psquare and what made them so great in the first place. Mr P, with his media-friendly mien, great looks and the ability to spin a good story, appeared to be ahead in the game already. Even before he dropped his first record, everyone rooted for who essentially was the flashier half of Psquare.

Peter Okoye’s shine hasn’t diminished, but it’s starting to look a bit superficial. Just take a look at his solo recording discography, and you find samples from American music mixing with a dose of Nigerian originality to create hybrid records. The man has released three records, ‘, and ‘The numbers look good on them too, with the first two running into millions, and the most recent one almost at the 300,000 mark in just three days. Business is sure looking good.

But delve into the records, and you find the samples and bites off old American records simply staring you in the face.

‘Cool it down’, which is his first official release, has a sample. It takes the lines: “I say, take me there, I wanna go there, take me there, Let’s go there, take me to that great place of wonders and wayshens,” from Mya’s 1999 single, <a href="" id="06f22750-4bf5-5717-ab3b-9808bf8b7e87">‘Take me there’, </a>one of our old-time favourites which features Maze, and Blinky Blink, and was a soundtrack for The Rugrats Movie’.

Up next is ‘My way’, a record which samples its instrumentals from Mario Winans’ ‘, a 2003 song co-which features Diddy, and co-produced by Fugees. The single was a huge success worldwide, reaching #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and #1 in the UK Top 40. It remains Winan’s only commercial hit single to date.

The video for ‘My way’, has Peter condemned to a desert by a jilted lover. It conceptually borrows from Chris Brown’s ‘visuals. Peter Okoye has always had his key influences from the 90s and early 2000’s R&amp;B singers. From his dance patterns to his songcraft, he constantly infuses elements of other materials from this era into his craft.

This was a core part of early Psquare, where they remade entire records to score hits. But time and the evolution of Nigerian pop music has ensured that they have had to tweak their craft. But with the split, Peter seems to have fallen back on old techniques to create future records.

Admittedly, these are his early days. Mr P, as a solo artist is still less than a year old, relying not on the strength of his artistry, but the fanbase which Psquare built over the years. He simply needs to grow himself fast, tweak his artistry and push his boundaries. Perhaps, we might have less of these records in the future. Everything else is there; the ability to pull a good dance move, the looks, and the goodwill. He needs to get the creative process right and surround himself with people who can mine depths of creativity to craft records.

The main concern here is the limit on the window he has to impress and score his hits early. None of his records so far have created a dent in the scene. While much of the attention he has got has been from his media rounds, and the novel feeling of curiosity from fans who are still working on adjusting to him as a solo artist. But that can’t power him forever. He needs to actively provide them with great music to justify the followership on his solo journey.

For now, his originality is being called into question. How does he respond? Time will tell.

But sometimes, Gold isn’t always gold, and the shiniest things are just, well, shiny.

<h1>Hip-Hop failed to get its long overdue Album of the Year win, but it is all thanks to</h1>

Bruno Mars won all seven awards that he was nominated for: Album and Record of the Year for “24K Magic” and Song of the Year for “That’s What I Like;” Best R&amp;B Performance and Best R&amp;B Song for “That’s What I Like.” “24K Magic” was also awarded Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical) and Best R&amp;B Album. Mars already claimed 11 Grammy Awards going into the night.

In Bruno's acceptance speech, the R&amp;B star gave thanks to The Recording Academy and the inner circle that helped him get to where he is today, including co-writers Christopher Brody Brown, James Fauntleroy, Philip Lawrence, Ray Charles McCullough II, Jeremy Reeve, Ray Romulus and Jonathan Yip.

"I've known these guys for over a decade," he shared onstage. "All the music, the music business horror stories you see in the movies, we've been through all of it. And this is the first time on this album that we all came collectively as a group and put this song together and put the album together. So fellas, it is an honor to share this with you tonight. These are my brothers."

Kendrick Lamar was the night’s second biggest winner, picking up five Grammys, starting with Best Music Video for “Humble,” a record which also won Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. He later won during the telecast for Best Rap/Sung Performance for “Loyalty” featuring Rihanna.

JAY-Z, who was 2018’s most nominated artist, with eight, walked away empty-handed. SZA, who was the highest nominated female with five nominations, also walked away with nothing.

Best Rap Album also went to Lamar. Accepting the awards on stage, the rapper showed his respect for artists who came before him including fellow nominee JAY-Z. “This is a special award,” said Lamar. “It showed me the true definition of what being an artist was” …  that “it’s not about accolades, cars and clothes … it’s about the next generation. Jay-Z, Nas, Puff — they showed me the game through their lyrics up close and from afar.”

Alessia Cara won Best New Artist, beating Khalid, a heavy favorite. She accepted by commenting that she had been practicing for a Grammy acceptance speech since childhood in the shower. “I didn’t expect this. None of this feels real. I probably won’t process this for another seven years.”

Cara was the only female artist awarded during the three-and-a-half hour broadcast.

Ed Sheeran, interestingly only got recognized in two categories coming into the awards and won both — for Best Pop Vocal Album for his album “Divide” and for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Shape Of You.”

Timaya failed to make history at the Grammy Awards, losing out at this year's event.

The Nigerian dancehall act featured alongside Stonebwoy, Chubb Rock, Stylo G, Bunji Garlin, Dre Zion &amp; Jaheil on Morgan Heritage’s new “Avrekedabra” album.

“Avrekedabra” was nominated for the Best Reggae album award coming up against “” by Chronixx, “” by Common Kings, “” by J Boog and “” by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley.

It lost, the category was won by the album “” by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley.

If the album had won in its category at the 60th Grammy Awards which held on January 28, 2018, Timaya would have been the first Nigerian-based act with a Grammy.

South African all-male choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo, have won the Grammys for the fifth time with an anniversary album.

The ensemble took the Best World Music Album award for “Shaka Zulu Revisited: 30th Anniversary Collection."

The Grammys awarded artists in 84 categories in multiple genres including classical, jazz, opera, gospel, new age, Christian and Latin music.

Hip-Hop failed to get its long overdue Album of the Year win, but it is all thanks to Bruno Mars, who spearheaded R&amp;B’s strong showing at the night, with 7 awards.

<h1>South African all-male choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo, have won the Grammys for the fifth time with an anniversary album.</h1>

Ladysmith Black Mambazo first came to worldwide attention when Paul Simon enlisted the group for his 1986 album “Graceland,” a landmark work of world music fusion which revived the folk icon’s career and won the most prestigious Grammy for Album of the Year.

“Shaka Zulu,” one of their major breakthrough projects came the following year. In 2017, the group decided to re-record the “Shaka Zulu” album in tribute to the group’s founder Joseph Shabalala, who has retired and handed control to his four sons.

The sons said that the latest album, with younger singers on the same tunes, was also meant to honor earlier members of the sprawling ensemble who have since died.

Shabalala, 76, was raised in the apartheid era on a white farm in KwaZulu-Natal province. He began singing after being inspired by dreams which eventually took on Christian themes.

As he retired from recording, Shabalala created a foundation to promote isicathamiya singing to children.

The Recording Academy, which administers the top prizes in US music, has long showered love on Ladysmith Black Mambazo, which has been nominated 19 times. The group was also nominated Sunday for Children’s Album but did not win.

The ensemble took the Best World Music Album award for “Shaka Zulu Revisited: 30th Anniversary Collection.

South African band Ladysmith Black Mambazo wins it for the 5th time

<a href="http://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/tunji-ige-meet-the-only-nigerian-to-be-nominated-for-2018-grammy-awards-id7663320.html" id="0b3c5fc2-9fec-578b-a00d-d329283a47b9">Another Nigerian who also lost a Grammy this year is Tunji Ige.</a> The rapper is nominated as a producer on 'Location', a record by Khalid, which lost the "Best R&amp;B" award.

'Location' is the debut single by American singer Khalid. It was released on February 19, 2017, by Right Hand Music Group and RCA Records as the lead single from his debut studio album American Teen. The track was produced by Syk Sense, Tunji Ige, and Chris McClenney. The song has since gone Platinum.

Timaya has failed to win a Grammy Award, after losing out in his category.

Africa’s hottest rapper, Cassper Nyovest, agrees with M.I Abaga that the Hip-hop movement of South Africa is leading the continent.

The rapper, <a href="http://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/cassper-nyovest-interview-m-i-abaga-filling-stadiums-id7852772.html" id="b2b338d5-0594-5bee-8b45-e1699a2053ee">in an interview with Pulse,</a> states that M.I Abaga who in 2017, called for local rappers to make more ‘Hip-hop’ music via his controversial ‘You rappers should fix up your life’, is right.

“Yes, South African Hip-hop is in the forefront of African Hip-hop in general. It might not be as popular as it is in South Africa in Nigeria. But I know for a fact that the rappers from Nigeria are kinda unknown in SA,” he says. “If we talk about crossing over, I know that a lot of people in Nigeria know about my music. I know that in Kenya and Ghana it’s the same thing.

“I’m not just talking about me, I’m talking about the movement.  is big in Ghana, but are there other rappers who are as big as Sarkodie from Ghana? The South African Hip-hop movement is big across, also in London, New York…we are out there performing in different countries.”

Cassper admits that this topic is controversial. But believes that this is the truth.

“Me saying that might offend people here. They might feel that I’m taking shots at Nigerian music. But that’s not the deal. If we are to discuss in terms of numbers and appeal across the world, it’s just the way it is.”

On Making 'Strict Hip-hop'

On M.I Abaga’s call to Nigerian rappers to infuse more rap into their music, Cassper disagrees in part but also agrees to certain aspects of the song.

“If I decide to rap on a beat like Davido’s ‘Fall’, which is more like Afro-pop, is it not Hip-hop? I don’t know, I’m not the one who came up with a set of rules. For me, it’s still Hip-hop because it is a rapper. I can decide to rap on anything. I just use it as a beat and rap on it. It doesn’t have to be a certain kind of beat.

“At the end of the day, it’s each to his own. If M.I feels like that’s his opinion, that’s his opinion. For me, anyone can rap in any language that is dope. If you say it’s Hip-hop, then it is Hip-hop.”

I ask him about the popular trend in Nigeria where rappers tweak their artistry to become singers. Cassper says “It’s none of my business.” Although, he also shares an important point: “I don’t think rappers must not sing. If you want to sing, you could sing. But if you are a rapper, we still need to hear you rap. You can’t sing all the time. We have to hear you rap because you need to rap for us to call you a rapper. If you sing all the time that means you are a singer now.”

On his 10 million album units claim

In December 2017, <a href="http://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/cassper-nyovest-has-sold-10-million-albums-id7715186.html" id="6119caf8-c37e-597c-8804-6f9bfeb94daa">Nyovest received certifications </a>from the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA) for selling over 10 million album equivalents. This figure includes streams, digital and physical downloads, caller ringback tunes and everything else he had sold since he first dropped a record.

<h1>The Nigerian superstar Pop singer is said to have welcomed a baby boy with his US manager Jada Pollock.</h1>

It is believed that the baby boy was born two weeks ago in London.

“He got his manager pregnant earlier this year, Wiz and Jada got into a romantic affair months after they started working together. He’s a bit reckless but she really has it for him,” a source revealed to Pulse recently.

Jada Pollock, is an entertainment veteran also known as Jada Styles. She’s the head of her consulting business firm she shared with African football star Didier Drogba. She is responsible for the branding of many affluent and prominent football players for the U.K. The Daily Star and West London Living once referred to her as a highly acclaimed image guru.

Jada shifted to gears to music management, when she joined Bu Vision, LLC – a management firm representing/managing some of the big names in international music scene such as Chris Brown &amp; Pia Mia, whom Jada served as their day-to-day. Bu Vision, is owned by Bu, Akon’s brother.

DJ Spinall, the young Nigerian man born Sola Oluseye Desmond in Lagos in the 80s, is the very picture of a self-made star.

Discovering the power of expanding the range of his craft early, he’s morphed from the guy who plays at clubs into a bonafide star DJ and music curator without a doubt. After two albums in as many years, his latest outing sees him surrounding himself with some of Nigeria’s biggest – and smoothest – singers to produce a playlist of party, vibes and ‘new wave’ music.

“Dreams” is a total victory; a happy-hour album of back-to-back hits with an inclusive feel which would see him catering to diverse crowds such as the guy on the streets, and the Islandic music nerds with an obsession for everything that is ‘wavy’ and packed full of vibes. Opener ‘Thinking about you’ features the buzzing Niniola. It plays to her strengths as a House banger, drawn from the bars of Johannesburg and commoditized into a dope record.

The rest of the record continue that promise, with Wizkid experimenting with full jazzy horns for the darkly exciting ‘Opoju’. It’s a fresh take for Starboy, whose international ambitions have diversified his music palettes.  Harrysong is surprisingly terrific on the Calypso anthem ‘Hanky Panky’,Simi goes all out on the emotional, but party-flavoured ‘Don’t let me go’, and Wande Coal and Davido are on the banging, party-starting ‘Olowo’.

One of the best cuts of the year also makes itself known on ‘Lifetime’, as WurLD states: “When I pull up to see you, give me a reason to see you, promise I will never leave you/If I lose my cool, don’t say I drink too much.” It is simplistic in its design, but impossible not to love; just like DJ Spinall.

These days you could find parallels in everything.

One dude once found the relationship between Okra soup and fertility. Another guy drew one long line that starts at Agbero and ends at angels in heaven. Everything and anything are connected. It’s simply a case of research before you can cook up a plausible correlation or connectivity story.

Like, take D’banj and Arsene Wenger. Who would have thought that it was a thing? D’banj and Arsene Wenger on the surface, don’t look like they share much together. One is old and washed up, the other is still young and washed….er, never mind.

D’banj and Wenger both have enjoyed comparatively lengthy careers at the top of their industries. Wenger has thrown in almost two decades at Arsenal, while D’banj has pushed past the decade mark in the music industry which is as chaotic, and entertaining as the English Premier League. Not that I’m comparing the quality of British football to the music that we make here in Nigeria, but trust me, as all fans of football know, the English Premier League is trash too. You see, they both work in trash industries. One serves poor but riveting football. The other serves riveting music but has a trash structure.

God! These connections are just popping out of me. They’re everywhere!

But away from that, the comparisons between D’banj and Arsene Wenger run through a whole lot. These are professionals who had seen better days in their careers. Wenger once dragged a team to the Champions League Final and had a squad that was unbeaten. D’banj once snagged a deal with Kanye West, and literally had a time that he was undefeated in the music industry. He was Africa’s Michael Jackson, a sweeping force of art and celebrity which blew away the hearts and minds of millions of fans across the world.

But the most important comparisons between them both lies in the players they tried and failed to recruit into their clubs or record labels. Or the players that they had, that left them.

Wenger once had Dutch striker Robin Van Persie leave his club to go win the league with Manchester United. D’banj lost a talent as rare as Wande Coal during the split with Mo’hits. Wande chose Don Jazzy, and just like Van Persie, he pulled off some moves for the record label, before departing and chasing independence.

Player recruitment which has been a very loud reason to loathe Wenger cuts through D’banj too. One of the longest running football jokes is the amount of top talent that Wenger identified, tried to sign and lost out. They make an impressive, world-beating squad which contain the likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Roberto Carlos, Cristiano Ronaldo, Yaya Toure, Xabi Alonso, Angel Di Maria, Lionel Messi, and more.

D’banj either never reached such legendary heights of personnel failure, or perhaps we just don’t have access to the full list yet. But we do know he has had his fair share of recruitment problems. In recent memory, D’banj has signed acts from the unmarketable 2kriss, to the outrageous Tonto Dikeh, and a Kayswitch who has refused to run a consistent campaign of music.

2Kriss are the equivalent of having Denilson and Armand Traore, Tonto Dikeh is Philipe Senderos in disguise, and Kayswitch, that’s a Naija-fied version of Abou Diaby; insanely talented, but unable to go on a consistent playing streak.

D’banj’s misses are legendary, too. Do you know he missed out on a chance to sign Olamide in 2013 and Davido in 2014?

Surprised? I thought so. Here’s the story.

For Olamide, D’banj tried to snag him up to a deal in 2013. The duo agreed a deal and contracts were drawn. From Lagos to Atlanta, they travelled together, gave themselves nicknames, and flirted openly on social media. But somehow, that deal fell through.

According to reports, Olamide could not handle a weird clause in the contract, and so, he had to bounce. It’s the same way Wenger missed out on Zlatan Ibrahimovic after he told him to go play a trial game before signing. Zlatan never played. He walked right away from the club and had a great career. For Davido, things were more interesting. D’banj made his move in 2014, long before Sony Music had flown in with wads of cash and an interesting contract for OBO. D’banj showed up, invited young David for talks about joining his empire. David was excited, and a gentleman agreement was reached. To seal the deal with a gift, D’banj gave Davido a Rolex watch.

“I remember in 2014 when I went back to Nigeria, some young boy who used to work for me brought an artist to me and said he wanted me to sign the artist. I remember we gave the artists a Rolex as a signing-on fee.

"I signed the artist and then I got a call later on and they said the parents of the artist wanted to meet with me, so I went and they said ‘please I want my boy to go to school’.

“And to look at today that the boy I’m talking about is one of the biggest artists out of this generation, which is Davido”,<a href="http://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/dbanj-talks-career-inspiration-signing-davido-with-a-rolex-id7249618.html" id="4744b2b1-c89f-55a1-a1c7-ac36a9953399">he disclosed in a recent chat.</a>

The deal didn’t work out. Turns out Davido’s father, the real Baba Olowo himself, didn’t want his son to sign for D’banj without a University education. The next year, Davido would graduate from Babcock on a 2:1 degree from the Department of Music. But the deal would never be revisited. He had moved far away from Arsene D’banj and found life with Sony and DMW.

Who would have thought that it was a thing? D’banj and Arsene Wenger on the surface, don’t look like they share much together. But they are alike in many ways.
