<p>Us (2019) Horror movies starring Black actresses are far and few in between-the 1974 Sugar Hill is credited as one of the first films to do sobut in recent years, that's begun to change. <p>Blacula (1972) Directed by a Black director (William Crain) and starring a Black actor (William Marshall), the 1972 film tells the the story of an 18th century prince sent to Transylvania to enlist the help of Dracula to end the slave trade. The film is hailed as having given rise to Blaxsploitation films of the 70s, an ethnic subgenre of film that catered to Black audiences and featured Black protagonists. "Crain made one of the most important, well-known films in the 70s as a 23-year old Black man in the industry," says Burgin. <p>The Girl With all the Gifts (2016) Based on a novel by the same name, this film centers around the character of Melanie (played by actress Sennia Nanua), who has one "gift": she's a sentient zombie-child, capable of restraining her urges for human flesh (for the most part). <p>Eve's Bayou (1997) Starring Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Samuel L. Jackson, the late 90s flick tells the story of a young girl living in Louisiana and her memory of an event that happens during the summer of 1962. "Some folks don't consider it horror because it doesn't have big scares, but I consider it a kind of Southern Gothic horror film," says Burgin. 10 Classic Horror Films Made by Black Creatives

<p>Dossett had served as a SEAL for almost a decade. In 2011, just a month after he left the Navy, several of his former teammates were shot down in a helicopter and killed. After you spend any period of time in the SEAL teams, youre going to feel broken and beat down, he says. And I didnt know what I wanted. That year, he attended several of his teammates funerals and worked as a surf guide/medic at a surf camp in Indonesia, and in 2012, he enrolled in the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Dossett intended to apply some of the lessons from his time with the SEALs to a business, but he wasnt sure what he wanted to create. </p>

<p>Dossett says much of the training required to become a SEAL is mentalyou learn to adapt and change your thinking, and to see that youre capable of more than you thought possible. You also learn to focus on whats in front of you, something he picked up during hell week, the brutal five-plus-day training camp all SEALs must endure. Trying to process the entire week at once is overwhelming, he says. Those who are most successful, myself included, tackle the week one step at a time. That lessonhow to change the small things in your day-to-day life to make big-picture changesstuck with him. Dossett landed at Google in 2013, but he yearned for what the Navy gave him: a sense of mission and a desire to serve the greater good. </p>

<p>Dossetts ambitions would have likely remained a side project or an unspoken goal, except that in saying them out loud to Mycoskie, a family friend, he was talking to someone who could actually make them happen and was used to helping others. </p>

<p>In 2006, Mycoskie founded Toms Shoes, its name shorthand for Tomorrows Shoes, its goal to get a pair of shoes to children in need around the world with each purchase. Soon Toms' espadrilles became a totem of well-dressed virtue, ubiquitous among brunch enthusiasts and hungover millennials. As Tomsand Mycoskies one-for-one modelturned into a phenomenon, he was lauded for doing well while doing good, but he began to sacrifice his own mental health for the companys growth. My relationships with my wife and kids suffered, and I started to resent Toms and all of the years that I had given to it, he says. After eight years, he sold half of his equity to Bain Capital, which valued the company at $625 million. </p>

<p>Despite his rsum and bank balance, success and global recognition couldnt solve the major problems he faced: what to do next, how best to continue helping people, how to be happier. I felt like I had checked all the boxes and had done everything my parents, society, and books had told me to do, he says. Mycoskie was diagnosed with mild depression in 2015, but with all he had going for him, he felt as if he didnt have the right to be depressed. I felt a void, he says. I was ashamed because I felt like I didnt want to admit to being depressed. Mycoskie started a social-entrepreneurship fund and spent the next two years on a decompression sabbatical, dabbling in different kinds of self-optimization. Thats why that night in Baja, Dossetts answer resonated. The ber-practical ex-SEAL and the Big Thinking do-gooder decided to try to create a self-help brand that would serve peopleand make money.</p>

<p>Not long after the surf trip, Mycoskie and Dossett made a plan. Mycoskie would put up the funds, and Dossett would leave Google to study human behavior and explore how to package best health practices into a self-help business. Their quest to find answers led Dossett to Andrew Huberman, Ph.D., an associate professor of neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine, in the summer of 2017. At the time, much of Hubermans research centered on the concept of neural plasticity, our brains ability to change in response to stimuli and thus learn and grow. Huberman explained that behavioral change can come about in two ways: all at once, in a high-intensity scenario (like a bad case of food poisoning that turns you off oysters forever), or as the result of small, incremental change. He argued that for people to realize their full potential in life, they often require the latter. The true way to change things is more like a staircase, he says. You take one step every day or couple of days, and slowly-ish, you arrive at the top. </p>

<p>Youve probably heard some version of this before, and so had Mycoskie and Dossett. But based on their research and discussions over two years with neuroscientists, psychiatrists, and exercise scientists from Harvard, Stanford, and the National Institutes of Health, they concluded that maybe change really was that simple. With Huberman and seven other expert advisors, the duo developed an evidence-based program consisting of ten 21-day challenges. Each challenge involves a process of attention, reward, and reinforcement. Some are what youd expect: foundational practices like fuel, sleep, hydration, breathing, and motion. Others are squishier: connection, gratitude, vision, clarity, and nature. Each one arrives in the mail, in a kit that contains the details of the challenge, a physical tool (like a water bottle with beads to keep track of your consumption or a timer that measures the length of your breathing exercises), and a booklet that explains the science. The timing, too, is intentional. Three weeks is short enough to keep someones attention but long enough to see a benefit from ones effort.</p>

<p> These challenges dont just help people forge deeper connections or habitualize better hydration. The meta goal is for users to develop a positive growth mind-set, a term coined by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, Ph.D., that means you believe your talents can be cultivated through effort and strategizing. The idea is that if everything is in place, including your hydration, sleep, and exercise, you can tackle whats next and ideally excel at it. Madeforits name comes from the notion that through change, you unlock your potential and discover what youre made forlaunched in beta in June 2019, enrolling more than 1,300 members.</p>

<p>They had plenty of competition. App stores are loaded with options that promise to help Americans fix whatever it is they think theyre doing wrong. (Sleep, fitness, life, love: If youre doing it, theres an expert wholl tell you youre doing it wrong and some kind of paid app thats meant to help you get better at it.) The entire market for self-care (and its more bullish cousin, self-optimization) is built on insecurities, real and imagined, and the mens segment is especially fraught, given the stigma that persists among men around having conversations about their mental health. Consequently, self-care for men is often masked in urgent, brazen messaging; some mens brands seem to argue that happiness in life can be achieved through sexual fulfillment. Hims, a wellness site and online pharmacy, aspires to create a handsome, healthy you through pills for erectile dysfunction (in addition to ones that will help fix other apparent problems plaguing guys, like performance anxiety, hair loss, and acne). It relies on this language to heighten your expectations for overnight fixes. </p>

<p>Mycoskie and Dossett want Madefor to be the exact opposite of that. Theres no bullshit, Mycoskie says. There are no special promises that this is going to change your life tomorrow. And unlike dozens of other programs, Madefor is designed to be tech-freethere are no digital wearables, no online manualssave for a private Facebook group for members. Huberman says there are benefits to going analog in a world full of people glued to their smartphones. Theres a richness to analog interactions thats amplified now that were all digitally wired, he says. When you do something in analog, its salient, it stands out, and its all the more powerful.</p>

<p>With Madefor, simplicity isnt cheap, but having skin in the game can help you commit to a program like this, says Christine Whelan, Ph.D., a clinical professor of consumer science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. And theres definitely skin: You pay $750 for the ten-month plan or $95 for month-to-month. But Mycoskie the entrepreneur has met Mycoskie the philanthropist, and the company offers deeply discounted scholarship memberships to qualified applicants. </p>

<p>This past spring, Madefor quietly reached the public amid quarantine. </p>

<p>Dossett says the beta participants and those whove signed up since its launch report that they feel calmer, healthier, and happier and that their relationships have improved. Some have lost weight, even though thats not a goal. And during the coronavirus pandemic, the program has also provided its members with a surprising lifeline. Were helping people realize they have the ability to exert control in powerful ways, says Dossett. </p>

<p>In a time of so much uncertainty, maybe this is the right moment for a box to arrive at your door with one thing you can control, one thing you can work on to help you get closer to the life you want. Madefors founders dont expect every challenge to be revelatory for everyone. Even they admit that there are a few habits theyve stuck with and a few theyve let go. And thats part of the deal. As much as its about boxes and rest and gratitude, Madefor is about understanding yourself and how to get better at being you.</p>

Romero Dawn of the Dead was different. In this flick, zombies weren't the slow-moving creatures we knew and loved (and secretly thought we could outrun or outsmart). Instead, they were frighteningly fast marathon runners and twice as violent as ever before. Dawn of the Dead makes the Walking Dead look like an episode of Sesame Street. The movie opens innocently enough; a group of six girlfriends descend upon an ultra-narrow cavern system, only to discover their being chased and hunted by things that aren't entirely human. We're not sure if we're scared more by them or the film's sheer claustrophobia-inducing tension. Until this point, few horror movies had re-envisioned horror in a summer, beach-side setting, proving that scary things can go bump in the night at any time of year (and even if you don't live anywhere even remotely close to water). <p>7) Night of the Living Dead (1968) Set in a farmhouse outside of Pennsylvania, this black-and-white film is a classic for a reason. In fact, it's because of this film, George A. Romero's first, that the zombie craze took off like it did. (Technically, the first ever zombie film predates this one by a few decades; still, it left a major impact on horror film forever.) The film was also radical for starring the first ever Black male actor in a mostly white cast. <p>8) REC (2007) Not to be too on the nose with things, but here's the gist of this film: A news reporter in Barcelona, Spain is called upon to investigate an apartment building; soon, the building is sealed off and, uh, put on quarantine lockdown as the building's tenants struggle to figure out what's happening around them. (Unsurprisingly, the real threat is coming from inside the building.) The rest of the found-footage film is movie magic, and massively better than the 2008 American remake. <p>9) The Cabin in the Woods (2011) It's really hard to talk about the Cabin in the Woods without spoiling it, so we'll leave it at this: Five college students rent an RV to spend time at a...cabin in the woods. And things do not go as planned. It's a Joss Whedon-special, which means nothing is ever what it appears in this movie. <p>10) "The Blair Witch Project" (1999) There's a reason this movie is so damn frightening: It's what you can't see that's more terrifying. Giving birth to the found-footage horror sub-genre, the Blair Witch Project uses your imagination to concoct a villain made from your worst nightmares, which is a hell of a lot scarier than any clown, zombie or masked killer. A villain (or group of villains, rather) you wouldn't expect. And much like Peele's first film, Us is a rich social commentary on race in America. (Peele says the film is based on our fear of outsiders, something that makes a lot of sense once you've seen it.) Fortunately, the Korean Train to Busan is a literal thrill-ride, with most of the movie taking place in the confines of a train as an ongoing zombie plague rages on. It begins as a story of a disconnected dad doing his best by his daughter that quickly turns into absolute madnessand we wouldn't have it any other way. <p>13) The Guest (2014) You might know Dan Stevens best for Downton Abbey or his starring role on FX's Legion, but we argue his standout was in this 2014 horror flick. In the Guest, Stevens plays the role of a military vet who visits a deceased friend and fellow vet's family in New Mexico. The family invites him to stay, and as things naturally do in a horror movie, their world begins to crumble as they discover the true origin of their houseguest. Stranger danger, people! <p>14) The Exorcist (1973) As far as horror staples go, The Exorcist is near the top of our list. One of the first horror franchises to use religion as a backdrop, the film is a terrifying one that explores the demonic possession of a young girl (who contorts, swears, and is generally really creepy). It became the first film ever to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. (Only five other films would follow in its path, including Get Out.) We argue Insidious (and its 2013 sequel) is the best, and just good old-fashioned ghost story fun. Following a family dealing with their son's comatose state, the franchise explores personal tragedy, family tension, and lots and lots of ghosts. (Check out the dude to the left for evidence.) Night Shyamalan's work and some of that probably isn't all that positive if you've ever seen The Happening, starring a very confused Mark Wahlberg. But the Sixth Sense is a masterpiece, no matter how you slice it. We don't want to give too much away, but it's a great entry-level horror flick as well as an intro to Shyamalan's movies. It's a nice departure from horror movies that take themselves too seriously and Samara Weaving is a scream queen in the making. <p>This week's episode of Killing Eve packed one hell of a punch (literally). Tonight, we witnessed Eve's breakdown at Kenny's funeral and Carolyn coping with the loss of her son. Villanelle finally learns of Eve's survival. And, of course, there's a brutal scene involving two evil clowns at a kid's birthday partychild's play for Killing Eve, as far as we're concerned. </p>

<p>Tonight, we also meet Jamie, Kenny's former boss at the "Bitter Pill." We learn he, too, has something to gain off Kenny's phone (presumably, more than just hiding the company's ass), as he forms an unlikely bond with Eve to uncover the truth about his death. </p>

He also appeared in one episode of Netflix's The Crown as President Nkrumah, who dances with Queen Elizabeth II (played by Claire Foy) in a pivotal scene. <p>In an interview with Richard Deitsch over at <a href="https://theathletic.com/1741609/" id="54fabfe0-1af6-367a-a420-3d3cdde971e8">  The Athletic </a> , the doc's director, Jason Hehir, said Jordan was concerned about the series during early discussions back in 2017.</p>

<p>"When you see the footage of [me with Scott Burrell], you're going to think that I'm a horrible guy," Jordan said to Hehir at the time. "But you have to realize that the reason why I was treating him like that is because I needed him to be tough in the playoffs and we're facing the Indiana's and Miami's and New York's in the Eastern Conference. He needed to be tough and I needed to know that I could count on him. And those are the kind of things where people see me acting the way I acted in practice, they're not going to understand it." </p>

<p>Hehir also called out a moment from the seventh episode of the series in which Jordan discusses his tough leadership style. "Look, winning has a price," Jordan says in an interview. <ul><li> On the first episode of the new season of Killing Eve, we're introduced to a new, mysterious, and all-around violent character by the name of Dasha. </li><li> As it turns out, she was a former mentor to Villanelle, though the details of their relationship are unclear. </li><li> Given their initial fight, it's safe to say their relationship likely didn't end on a positive note.  </li></ul>

<p>So far, the third season of Killing Eve is off to an especially bloody and unpredictable start. And in the first episode, we've also been introduced to a slew of new characters, many of whom are likely to become major players in the upcoming season, assuming Villanelle (Jodie Comer) doesn't immediately and creatively murder them first. </p>

<p>One such character is Dasha (Harriet Walter), who we meet at the top of the first episode in a flashback. In 1974, Dasha, then, is a young competitive gymnast. We witness her being berated by her coach and kissing a young manwho she then violently beats into unconsciousness and pours a bag of chalk into his mouth (which explains Villanelle's crafty killing technique later in the episode).</p>

<p>Flash-forward to a scene from Villanelle's (or whichever alias she's assumed) wedding. During the cake-cutting portion of the night, she sees a (now older) Dasha standing in the back of the room. Naturally, Villanelle runs, tackles her, and breaks a table in the process. "This is my special day," she tells Dasha, mid-chokehold. "Sincere congratulations," Dasha replies. </p>

<p>As it turns out, Dasha and Villanelle go way back, even pre-Villanelle's days as a professional assassin; we learn Dasha actually trained Villanelle (and other assassins) and is still an operative for The Twelve. We also learn Dasha trains young gymnasts in Spain, too, with the same kind of unpleasantness she experienced as a gymnast when she was younger.</p>

<p>Now, she wants to convince Villanelle into reclaiming her job for The Twelve. Dasha admits that if she can convince Villanelle into taking her job back, she'll finally "be sent home to Russia," though a skeptical viewer might believe there's more here at stake for her than she wants to admit. </p>

<p>The relationship between Dasha and Villanelle isn't all anger and violence, judging by their interactions, but it's clear there wasn't closure. We should expect a whole lot more violence as the season, and details of their relationship, continue to unfold.</p>

<p>"For many people, there is a new awareness here about how much they need and value other people in their lives," <a href="https://www.drpaulmccarthy.com/" id="c3a9cbf1-66f1-3c3b-a77c-b48135b15892">  Dr. Paul McCarthy </a> , a U.K.-based "sports psychologist," said in an email. "In social identity terms, we all identify as belonging to the same group nowself-isolators."</p>

<p>Some time in the last month, I stopped hating running, too. It used to feel like a chore. Now, it feels lighter, easier, and I don't mind as much the constant interruption by cars or pedestrians in my path. (Plus, I just feel more agile and coordinated after only a few weeks? I guess that's what avoiding cardio can do to a guy.)</p>

<p>About a half mile into a recent run along New York City's West Side Highway, I encountered a handful of other, lone runners. On several occasions, we'd make brief eye contact, nod, and continue on. Nodding between runners is a polite gesture, but on a day like thisthe day before <a href="https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/new-york-state-pause" id="ede1bad8-4887-3f37-a818-825a56ba1c25">  New York state officially </a> went on "pause"it was an unexpected friendliness you ordinarily wouldn't expect from strangers, let alone, New Yorkers.</p>

<p>Maybe we were all just really fucking grateful to be outside. Or, with everything terrible going on, running has become our shared distraction. Before, running forced me to sit with my thoughts. Now, I see my thoughtsthoughts about the safety of my family or friends amid the pandemic, how this might impact my workplace or general existential dreadon the faces of everyone around me. </p>

<p>While there's a lot be worried about, I remind myself that at least, we're all running in the same direction. </p>

<p>On <a href="https://twitter.com/kylebrandt/status/1238105405735276548?s=21" id="75389e04-cdec-3ff9-abf0-e03dbf7e9ea7">  Twitter </a> , Good Morning Football host Kyle Brandt described another type of tough guy you might've have seen on your timelines, newsfeeds or maybe even encountered in real life: the corona tough guy. If you haven't spotted him, he's the guy who insists we're all overreacting for social distancing, self-isolating or paying attention to the news. It's just the flu, he'll tell you, what's the big fucking deal?</p>

<p>Case in point: <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/03/19/coronavirus-spring-break-party/" id="c6e5c9a9-9ade-3c0a-a328-6754faf5e4e2">  these spring breakers in Florida </a> . "If I get corona, I get corona," one man told Reuters. "At the end of the day, I'm not gonna let it stop me from partying,"</p>

<p>On one end of the corona tough guy spectrum, there are <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/20/21187983/debunk-coronavirus-conspiracy-theories-how-to-covid-19-news-science" id="bd49c284-0d48-3f3b-afbd-3e5bac27d9eb">  conspiracy theorists </a> the folks who believe the coronavirus was built in a lab and used as a bioweapon. On the other end are the people who refuse to social distance amid a quarantine.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.ashleymerryman.com/" id="ded7049d-3d10-313a-a1f1-84daa0e25b34">  Ashley Merryman </a> , an author and researcher in psychology, explained to me that for some of the latter group, and men in particular, the idea of social distancing might make them look weak. "It might be attached to their perception of their own masculinity," she said. Still, the basic tenet behind all corona tough guys is the same: The coronavirus isn't worth panicking over.</p>

<p> But opting not to social distance is reckless and unethical and now is not the time to indulge a corona tough guy. In the hands of a guy with hundreds of thousands of followers or just those of an average guy with a Facebook account and a few friends, voicing that it's "just the flu" amid a global health catastrophe is pretty damn irresponsible. And we have enough misinformation and #FakeNews to combat with as it is.</p>

<p>Mark Fenster, a professor of law at the University of Florida and author of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Conspiracy-Theories-Secrecy-American-Culture-ebook/dp/B004F9QLXC" id="7c6eb083-7c7c-3dd6-a967-4a8e1a869338">  Conspiracy Theories: Secrecy and Power in American Culture </a> , explained to me the basic logic behind some of these dudes' decisions. In his eyes, these guys might be the type who are generally critical of the "consensus," meaning even cold, hard facts might not convince someone to social distance. (Merryman added the "Dunning-Kruger" effect might also be at play: "The less people know about things, the more certain they are right.")</p>

<p>So to those out there still partying, give it a rest. You're the guys in horror movies who tell us everything's fine when the killer's still on the looseand now more than ever, it's becoming harder to tell who the villain is.</p>

Tough guys are everywhere. You probably know a few of them. He's the dude who insists that the gendered wage gap is a myth or doesn't believe in a woman as president. He's also the kind of guy who doesn't take a sick day, because he's never sick enough, or reads headlines on his Facebook feed with an undiscerning eye. He's the kinda guy who brags that he can out squat you, but only does quarter-squats when put to the test. He is soulless.

Hey, Corona Tough Guys: Please Shut Up

<p>To address these issues of mental health as they relate to the coronavirus' impact on our personal lives, Men's Health Editor-in-Chief Rich Dorment moderated a conversation on Slack with <a href="http://colfa.utsa.edu/psychology/faculty/mary_mcnaughton_cassill" id="7c25706e-91da-3740-ac03-474258ba4c5f">  Dr. Mary McNaughton-Cassill </a> , a clinical psychologist and a professor of psychology at the University of Texas, San Antonio. Dr. Mary McNaughton-Cassill answered questions about productivity, anxiety, and feeling frustrated, posed by Hearst employees. The following is a summary of that conversation.</p>

<h1>  How can we prevent isolation and social distancing from reducing our productivity day-to-day?  </h1>

<p><a href="https://www.menshealth.com/trending-news/a31625790/creative-desk-setup-work-from-home-twitter/" id="3ad80d92-0a03-3b6b-ad3f-e7735f7dc7a8">  Working from home </a> can be a challenge, if you're used to being part of a team or need the office environment to help you focus. But you may be able to use technology to help you cope.</p>

<p>Set productivity goals for yourself or work with a friend or team to create a work from home schedule. Build in deadlines to chat with each other so you have some sense of urgency to stay on task. <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/trending-news/a31696414/social-distancing-self-isolation-virtual-happy-hour-coronavirus/" id="de188679-233b-3db4-a287-fae3ab93363e">  Arrange virtual breaks </a> in your work day so you can check in with others, chat while you eat lunch, and otherwise maintain your connections.</p>

<h1>  How do we take refuge when working from home with roommates and/or a partner? </h1>

<p>While social support is an important component of mental health, close quarters and anxiety dont complement each other. Familiarity can cause contempt. Annoying habits, opinions, and mannerisms get amplified when you have nowhere to hide.</p>

<p>Maybe you can agree on guidelines for sharing the space and managing noise so people can find time to work, <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/fitness/a31439789/best-home-workout-guide/" id="b48ffb41-dc0a-3e09-a1ea-d40358455691">  exercise </a> , and relax. You might have to create new plans for cooking and sharing food while you are confined at home and for taking care of household tasks. If you have kids at home you may want to create a schedule that specifies when they do school work, when they play, when they need to spend quiet time, and how you can find some time to yourself.</p>

<h1> How do we keep our cool in front of our kids during such uncertain times? </h1>

<p>I dont think it's a good idea for parents to burden their children with all of their worries, but they've surely noticed that things are not normal right now. Teens and school-age children are seeing the news and talking with their friends and even very young kids know that their routines have changed. Giving them age-appropriate information and talking to them about their own feelings can help. </p>

<p>But admitting that you are on edge, telling them how you are trying to cope, and asking for their help can actually promote a sense of family teamwork. I also like the book <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Cool-Cats-Calm-Kids-Williams/dp/0915166941" id="3e5a3c5e-6089-31a8-a917-383d4646d949">  Cool Cats, Calm Kids </a> by Mary Williams which helps children learn some relaxation techniques.</p>

<h1>  What are the things we can do to help us feel connected? </h1>

<p>Use text, email, and the phone to reach out to those people you always meant to call. Set goals with your friends (to exercise, organize a drawer, practice meditation, etc.) and then check in to see how it went. Exchange recipes, craft ideas, new music, or movie suggestions. If you find yourself shutting down or are starting to isolate from others because you feel depressed, reach out to someone you trust to talk to. Realize that this crisis wont last forever. </p>

<h1> How do I stop feeling guilty or ashamed when I accidentally touch my face? </h1>

<p>I think this is one of those things that <a href="https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200317-how-to-stop-touching-your-face" id="1d8ad250-1366-3c50-a5f0-06979978b5b6">  we cant totally eliminate </a> . Humans communicate with facial expressions and our hands and we all have a plethora of personal habits we arent even aware of like twirling our hair, pulling our ears, or touching our face. If you try to change too drastically, you are likely to get so frustrated you quit. This phenomenon, called the <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/281298055_Abstinence_Violation_Effect" id="9110b7e4-108c-3e82-add5-72e80d7dcf8d">  Abstinence Violation Effect </a> , is responsible for the demise of many New Years resolutions.</p>

<p>Instead of punishing yourself for not eliminating the behavior, focus on rewarding yourself for making changes. Maybe you could count how many times you touch your face in an hour and set the goal of reducing that number by using reminders and giving yourself small rewards to maintain your motivation. But remember, too, that there is no one magic way to avoid this virus, so try to focus on using <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/comparatively-speaking/201810/understanding-what-makes-behavior-modification-work" id="40e351b5-159e-31e3-ad63-c848c3eedbce">  more than one strategy </a> to protect yourself.</p>

<p><strong> <strong> How do we handle feeling frustrated by people who still go to parties and other social gatherings amid the current situation? </strong> </strong></p>

<p>People are coping differently with this situation. Some are trying to hang on to a sense of normality by denying the threat or refusing to change their routines, while others are channeling their anxiety into trying to do something to stop the virus. However, as regulations increase people will have to limit their activities, so the gap will decrease. If you can focus on how you take care of yourself, it may help as well.</p>

<h1> How do we stop feeling guilty when participating in social activities, even if it's just going for a run or grocery shopping? </h1>

<p>In the absence of widespread testing, none of us know who has had the virus and we dont even know a whole lot about how it spreads. All we can do is practice good hygiene and social distancing and keep reminding ourselves that 80 percent or more of people who get the virus <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/27/world/asia/coronavirus-treament-recovery.html" id="7194a6bd-2c8e-30a3-abc7-ba9d56e6819e">  have mild symptoms </a> .</p>

<p>It's also important to remember that if you dont shop, exercise, and take care of yourself, you are at greater risk for getting ill or depressed which wont help the people around you. </p>

<h1> How should someone prepare for changing their lifestyle for the foreseeable future? </h1>

<p>We are all in uncharted territory right now. If your life is changing a great deal because of the virus, spend some time thinking about what you enjoyed about going out, watching sports, or socializing. I have friends who have had virtual dinner parties by each preparing food at home and then Skyping the meal. Others have watched the same movie, television show, or classic sports event, and texted while doing so. Maybe it is time to look back at some of the classic games, performances, or concerts you havent seen for years. </p>

Washington State Continues Efforts To Limit Spread Of Coronavirus

<p><strong> How can we support friends who are no longer receiving pay, as a result of city-wide closures of bars, restaurants, and other "non-essential" establishments? </strong></p>

<p>I think I would ask them directly what you can do to help. If money is short, could you help them out with practical gifts like a bottle of shampoo or a pizza? If they are still going to work and you are working from home, could you take on a little more of the housework or meal preparation? In many cases, it's not how much you do for someone, it's how much you convey to them that you see what they are going through and care enough about them to reach out.</p>

<h1> How can we stay informed without panicking?  </h1>

<p>I have three suggestions. First, practice media literacy. Always think about who produced the content you are viewing, what their motives are, and who they are targeting. Second, use reason to temper your emotions. We spend a lot of time thinking about worst case scenarios and ruminate about how unfair things [are]. But such dysfunctional or irrational thoughts tend to perpetuate our depression, anxiety, or anger. Forcing ourselves to generate alternatives, to look at the big picture, and to focus on helping other people can interrupt the negative pattern. </p>

<p>Third, increase your understanding of the issues we face. There are also lots of good books on changing habits, making decisions and understanding stress, and coping. We often complain that we dont have time to do all the things we would like to, but in the next few weeks as things around us close, we are likely to have the time to explore some of these topics.</p>

<h1>  What's your general advice for those feeling a little anxious right now?  </h1>

<p>The Bottom Line: This is an unprecedented experience for all of us. We know that our ancestors have survived disasters, pandemics, and wars, but we tend to dramatize their experiences, and celebrate the rare, but heroic moments. During WWII, the people who stayed home planted victory gardens, tried to conserve as much as they could for the war effort, and wrote letters to soldiers overseas, for years on end. I am confidant that we have the ability to have our greatest generation moments during this pandemic as well. </p>

<p>The soldiers on the front lines, our medical personnel, public health specialists, and scientists need our support, so if you know someone doing this work, tell them how much we appreciate their efforts. The rest of us can make a difference by stopping the spread of the virus and taking care of each other. Heroism isnt always dramatic.</p>
