Group shots, half-naked gym mirror torso pictures, and Snapchat filters: there are certain types of photos that dating app users are tired of seeing.

But it turns out there's one style of picture in particular that may not just be putting off potential matches, but actually hindering your chances of getting accepted onto selective apps.

Anyone who posts a "duck face" mirror selfie will not be allowed to join elite dating app <a id="69337350-1b4d-3e12-a30f-15fde171ac40" href="https://www.theinnercircle.co/?utm_campaign=EMEAEUALLENBrandedSearch&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4oSzm4WL3wIVkYKzCh0FCQdQEAAYASAAEgIbE_D_BwE"> The Inner Circle </a> , the company's co-founder David Vermeulen told INSIDER.

The app has 1.3 million users in 41 cities across 25 countries around the world, but there are currently 1.2 million people on the waiting list. What's more, there are 3,000 to 4,000 more people applying to become a member every day.

About half the people who apply are approved immediately, but people with "duck face" mirror selfies will be rejected.

"When somebody registers for The Inner Circle we look at whether they have a good picture," Vermeulen says. "Are you the only person in it? Is it a selfie with 'duck face' in the mirror? We still have those unfortunately… that’s not the perfect fit."

The selection process is not only down to photos, though — the team of seven dedicated screeners (aided by an initial algorithm) also look at age, profession, and education.

The average Inner Circle user is 31, but most are between the ages of 25 and 45. Celebrities or models, however, may get approved even if they're in their early 20s. The app has had applications from "Game of Thrones" cast members and famous DJs — "We triple-check those people," Vermeulen says.

Although being selective is controversial, Vermeulen says the screening is "necessary" in order to "connect like-minded people" and create "balance."

And balance is interpreted in various ways — in Amsterdam when the app first launched, for example, The Inner Circle found it was being dominated by people working for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines as colleagues recommended it to each other.

"It was like KLMdating.com," Vermeulen laughs. "I'm not approving everyone from KLM any more because you don't want it to be only that. You want to have more balance."

Despite the fact that Vermeulen says the Inner Circle is about connecting like-minded people, he also says they want it to be a diverse platform: "We don't want just City workers, we want people in the creative industries too, people working in sports and entertainment."

The app may have a reputation of being "elite," but that doesn't necessarily mean you won't be accepted if you're a student or working in a lower-paid job — you just need to show that you're serious about dating and put effort into your profile.

It's probably best to leave the "duck face" mirror selfie out, though.

There's nowhere like London at Christmas, a city which runs solely on mince pies and mulled wine for the whole of December.

While the streets may be horrendously packed with seasonal shoppers, there's one consolation which makes venturing out bearable: the Christmas lights and decorations.

Thanks to Instagram, an increasing number of shops and restaurants are pushing the boat out with their festive displays in the hope of enticing influencers to swing by for a Christmas selfie.

Needless to say, there are certain spots around the city that you're probably already bored of seeing on your Instagram feed (yet also somehow want to visit and get a snap for yourself).

Here are the nine shots of Christmas in London that nearly every Instagram influencer has taken this year.

Covent Garden's decorations offer a veritable feast for the gram — one trip to the area can provide influencers with content for days.

The bathrooms in quirky central London restaurant Sketch are an Instagram fave all year round thanks to their fun egg-shaped cubicles.

Now, the iconic toilets' have had a Christmas makeover, and Instagram fiends just can't get enough.

The luxury Mayfair private members' club has pulled out all the stops with its incredible outdoor display, featuring a gigantic Christmas tree festooned with twinkly lights, presents, and giant candy canes. Even better, you don't even need to step inside to get the photo.

<h1> 4. The Ivy Chelsea Gardens gingerbread house </h1>

The Ivy brasseries are known for their seasonal decor, but they have outdone themselves with their Christmas restaurant fronts — the Chelsea Garden branch with its gingerbread house aesthetic has proven particularly popular on Instagram.

<h1> 5. Fortnum &amp; Masons baubles </h1>

Fortnum &amp; Mason's window displays are tourist attractions in their own right, but this year it's a decoration inside the famed store that is causing a stir on Instagram.

The incredible golden baubles hanging down the middle of the department store provide the perfect opportunity for a (sort of) unique selfie.

<h1> 6. The Natural History Museum Ice Rink </h1>

No stereotypical London Christmas experience would be complete without a visit to the ice rink at the Natural History Museum.

The imposing building and the magnificent tree provide the perfect backdrop for cute skating Boomerangs.

<h1> 7. The Regent Street Christmas Lights </h1>

The celestial angels that line Regent Street and St James in central London are back.

The stunning designs, created by Paul Dart of James Glancy Design, are, in the eyes of most people, London's most elegant Christmas lights.

Most importantly, however, they are also highly Instagrammable.

The Christmas tree at Claridge's is not your usual Christmas tree, but it certainly exudes the magic of the season.

Designed by Diane von Furstenburg, the six metre tall Tree of Love is inspired by DvF's strong belief in the power of love.

Cartier on New Bond Street is all wrapped up for Christmas.

If you can't afford to shop there, at least you can get a snap for the 'gram.

Avocados: a healthy source of fats, a brunch staple, and, apparently, the reason millennials will never get on the property ladder.

But according to a Michelin-starred chef, there's a dark side to avocados and we should actually stop eating them because of it.

Top Irish chef JP McMahon, who owns Michelin star restaurants Aniar and Tartare, says avocados are "the blood diamonds of Mexico."

According to McMahon, restaurants should stop serving them and we should replace the fruit with Jerusalem artichokes.

"I don't use them because of the impact they have on the countries that they are coming from — deforestation in Chile, violence in Mexico," he told the <a id="d9bfb8aa-99e5-35a1-a319-1fbbb8a4068a" href="https://www.independent.ie/life/food-drink/restaurants-should-stop-serving-avocado-irish-michelin-star-chef-says-theyre-akin-to-battery-chickens-37592513.html"> Irish Independent </a> .

"For me, they are akin to battery chickens. I think Irish restaurants should make a conscious effort to not use avocados or at least reduce the amount they use. You can get Fair Trade avocados but most are not produced this way."

McMahon is imploring not just restaurants but the public to stop eating them.

"Change won't happen unless consumers avoid them," he continued. "We don't use any in our restaurants. There are plenty of alternatives. We have Jerusalem artichokes (as an alternative to avocados) with hollandaise in our brunch menu in Tartare at the moment."

Despite the fact that the avocado is one of the trendiest and most popular foods of the moment — there are restaurants dedicated to the fruit both in New York (Avocaderia) and London (Avobar) — an increasing number of eateries have removed the so-called superfood from their menus in recent months.

Wild Strawberry Cafe in Buckinghamshire, UK, for example, last week announced it would no longer serve avocados.

"The Western world's obsession with avocado has been placing unprecedented demand on avocado farmers, pushing up prices to the point where there are even reports of Mexican drug cartels controlling lucrative exports," the cafe wrote on <a id="2969a109-33de-3074-ad57-6558355a6b4b" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BqrGHSPBCji/"> its Instagram page </a> .

"Forests are being thinned out to make way for avocado plantations. Intensive farming on this scale contributes to greenhouse emissions by its very nature and places pressure on local water supplies."

However, not everyone is convinced we need to stop eating our beloved avocados immediately, with some restaurateurs pointing out that there are lots of foods, from beef to almonds, which are not always produced sustainably.

"I don't think we should get too distracted by some cafes that may be banning it," <a id="91787ab1-bbbf-3c30-aafa-89d619f6c822" href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-britain-food-land/trendy-avocados-removed-from-uk-menus-amid-environmental-concerns-idUSKBN1O22HI"> said Dan Crossley </a> , executive director of Food Ethics Council, an English charity.

"It does raise interesting and important questions on where we get our food from... but I don't think a wide-scale ban of any particular product will solve the problems we have."

A Michelin-starred chef says restaurants should stop serving avocados because they're like 'the blood diamonds of Mexico'

Animal rights organisation PETA has sparked controversy once again.

This time, it's with a chart on how to "stop using anti-animal language," which has prompted outrage, amusement, and confusion.

PETA has come up with more animal-friendly versions of familiar sayings: "Kill two birds with one stone" becomes "feed two birds with one scone," for example, and instead of "bring home the bacon," we should apparently say "bring home the bagels."

However, it's safe to say the vast majority of people have not reacted positively to the suggestions, describing the chart as "ridiculous," "pathetic," and "moronic."

"This is the biggest pile of horse s---," wrote one Twitter user.

Another person suggested that PETA's recommendations would simply damage the reputation of vegans.

Others pointed out that there are problems with PETA's supposedly improved idioms too.

However, PETA is standing by its suggestions. A spokesperson told INSIDER: "Words matter, and as our understanding of social justice evolves, our language evolves along with it.

"Just as it became unacceptable to use racist, homophobic, or ableist language, phrases that trivialize cruelty to animals will vanish as more people begin to appreciate animals for who they are and start 'bringing home the bagels' instead of the bacon."

The chart comes following <a id="3dddf76f-b60e-3df0-aeb5-0b37de9a8b34" href="https://theconversation.com/how-the-rise-of-veganism-may-tenderise-fictional-language-106576"> the claims </a> of an academic from Swansea University that meat metaphors may truly start to disappear from our lexicon as they don't reflect the zeitgeist.

"The increased awareness of vegan issues will filter through consciousness to produce new modes of expression," Shareena Hamzah said.

For a restaurateur, there is no greater accolade than being awarded a prestigious Michelin star.

Well, except for being awarded two or, the top award, three.

The Michelin Guide is, in the eyes of many, a fine-dining bible. However, when it was launched by tire company Michelin in 1900, it was intended as a way of helping French motorists find decent places to stay and eat while on the road.

As of 2018, there are over 2,971 Michelin-starred restaurants across the globe.

But what exactly does it take to gain a much-coveted star? And what's the difference between restaurants which have one, two, or three?

All inspectors from Michelin are catering and hospitality experts who visit restaurants anonymously and pay for their meals, meaning owners, chefs, and waiting staff never know when they're being judged.

Exactly what inspectors are looking for when assessing a restaurant is kept largely secret, but Michelin says theylook at five criteria:

<ol><li> Quality of the products </li><li> Mastery of flavor and cooking techniques </li><li> The personality of the chef in their cuisine </li><li> Value for money </li><li> Consistency between visits. </li></ol>

A restaurant's interior decor, table settings, or service are never factored into the equation when it comes to awarding stars, <a id="82e73b5b-af09-36e0-ae57-d4ac4ee788a8" href="https://guide.michelin.com/sg/to-the-stars-and-beyond"> Michelin explains </a> .

Aspects such as these are scored with a less well-known knife and fork symbol — this goes from one set of cutlery ("quite comfortable") up to five ("luxury in the traditional style").

Of course, the most revered and coveted accolade is the Michelin star, the awarding of which has the potential to boost a restaurant's fortunes more than anything else.

The star system was launched in 1933 with the aim of highlighting the most exceptional restaurants around the world.

As much as a star is a huge achievement for a chef, Michelin insists the awards are for the benefit of consumers rather than cooks.

This is the difference between one, two, and three Michelin-starred restaurants

The first pictures of the outfits worn by Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas to tie the knot have finally been revealed after the wedding was almost as highly-anticipated as Meghan and Harry's royal nuptials.

Both bride and groom wore bespoke Ralph Lauren, with personal touches adding meaning to their outfits.

For the ceremony in Jodhpur, India on November 30, Chopra wore a gown she'd worked on with the luxury fashion brand.

Hand-beaded and hand-embroidered with floral and scroll motifs, the stunning gown featured scalloped sleeves and a high-neck collar which complemented the bride's 75-foot-long tulle veil. It also featured a piece of her mother-in-law's wedding dress.

A representative for Ralph Lauren told INSIDER the embroidery — which included pearl paillettes, crystal seed beads, and Swarovski crystals — took 1,826 hours to complete.

Under the long-sleeved gown, Chopra, 36, was wearing a strapless column dress made of 2,380,000 mother of pearl sequins. She completed her look with custom Jimmy Choos.

There were eight personal words and phrases stitched into the gown including the couple's wedding date, Jonas' full name (Nicholas Jerry Jonas), and Chopra's parents' names (Madhu &amp; Ashok), as well as "Hope," "Family," and "Love."

Jonas, 26, wore a custom Ralph Lauren Purple Label double-breasted black tuxedo and custom patent lace-up dress shoes. The inner lapel of the tuxedohad a small piece of lace from his bride's dress sewn in, embroidered with the Urdu words "My Jaan," which means "My Life."

Ralph Lauren is a fashion house that has particular meaning for the couple, as in the early days of their relationship, Chopra and Jonas attended the 2017 Met Gala as guests of the designer.

"For the Western wedding, we had been talking to a bunch of incredible designers, but ultimately when Ralph Lauren approached us, I learned that Ralph has only designed three wedding dresses in 50 years — one for his daughter, his daughter in law, and his niece," Chopra told <a id="6cd7d096-523b-3d38-a575-956bed84dcdb" href="https://people.com/style/priyanka-chopra-wedding-dress-photos-details/"> People </a> . "I was blown away."

Needless to say, the couple's wedding look has been very well received by fans, many of whom commented their approval on social media.

Asking someone to marry you can be one of the most nerve-wracking moments in a person's life.

Even the most progressive of couples often find themselves feeling surprisingly traditional when it comes to proposals, finding a desire either to get down on one knee, or be proposed to themselves.

But of course, the focal point of a proposal is the ring.

While <a id="5f17d9aa-7d5a-31fd-af6f-b21339b2a012" href="https://www.thisisinsider.com/male-model-proposes-to-girlfriend-with-choice-of-6-rings-2018-12"> one man recently decided to propose with a choice of six rings </a> , most pop the question with just the one. And choosing the right one can be difficult.

An engagement ring should be personal, so it's hard to come up with hard and fast rules on how to pick the right one.

But according to a bespoke jeweller, there are certain mistakes everyone should avoid.

The main one? Choosing white gold over platinum.

If your partner favours silver jewellery over gold or rose gold, it can be tempting to get them a white gold engagement ring. However, according toNikolay Piriankov, founder of bespoke jeweller <a id="0a72643b-9733-35ae-a9c9-71534d378169" href="https://taylorandhart.com/"> Taylor &amp; Hart </a> , this is in fact an error.

"Most people aren't aware of the difference between the two," Piriankov explained to Business Insider. "They look the same but the reality is that there's no such thing as white gold in nature."

White gold is in fact yellow gold that's been blended into an alloy with other metals to give it its colour, then given a rhodium plating on top of that.

The trouble is, that plating doesn't last, meaning a white gold ring requires a lot of upkeep.

"Over time, the plating wears away and you have to take a white gold ring back to have it replated," says Piriankov. "It's an ongoing thing you have to be aware of."

With that in mind, platinum — which makes up 80% of Taylor &amp; Hart's sales — is often a better choice.

While platinumisa little more expensive than white gold, it doesn't cost as much as it used to, with the prices of the two having converged.

"Platinum used to cost almost double white gold but now it's only about £100 or £150 ($128 or $192) more," Piriankov adds.

Unlike white gold, platinum is a naturally white metal — 95% of a platinum ring is pure platinum, with the remaining 5% being other white metals which make the ring more workable.

In contrast, 75%of a white gold ring is yellow gold mixed in with metals like palladium and silver, which give it the silverish colour.

"There's nothing wrong with white gold," Piriankov says. "But given the small price difference, platinum is better value for the customer in the long term."

A bespoke jeweller says there's a good reason why you shouldn't choose a white gold engagement ring

Katy Perry's relationship with Orlando Bloom has had its very public ups and downs, but the singer just made a grand gesture showing her feelings towards him.

Perry auctioned off a date with her actor boyfriend at a charity event, only to swoop in at the last moment of bidding, beating the top fan's offer by $30,000.

The pop star, 34, was performing at One Love Malibu, a fundraiser held in King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas, California for those affected by <a id="a705121f-4d74-381a-ab40-641a59e255d4" href="https://www.thisisinsider.com/california-wildfires-celebrities-who-have-evacuated-their-homes-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> the Woolsey fire. </a>

The bidding reached $20,000 thanks to one excited fan named Laura, but Perry wasn't having it.

"Laura, I'm sorry. I'm buying it for $50,000," she said, before literally dropping the mic and walking off stage.

Perry's move has divided opinion — while some have praised her for donating so much money, others have accused her of being overly protective of Bloom and ruining an exciting experience for a fan.

"What Katy Perry did wasn’t cool and her insecurity regarding her relationship with Orlando Bloom is showing," wrote one person on Twitter.

"It really isn't cool, that was probably the fan's dream," agreed another.

One person described the move as "a whole new level of 'stay away from my man.'"

However, others highlighted that Perry did at least contribute significantly to the fundraising effort.

"Since it goes to charity I guess it's a win," one person wrote.

This year's winner in the <a id="7b5cfaba-a477-3f70-ad6b-6b04c8c5a1cf" href="https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/TravelersChoice-Restaurants"> Travellers’ Choice Awards </a> , run by TripAdvisor, has emerged as Au Crocodile in Strasbourg, France.

The ranking is based on the millions of reviews and opinions shared by TripAdvisor users. Restaurants were measured using an algorithm which took into account both the quantity and quality of reviews for restaurants around the world, gathered over a 12 month period.
