The next big <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/enterprise-startups?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="0c579fae-7051-3ae7-a004-379c82c4e405"> trend in startups </a> is … no code.

That's what Ed Sim, founder and managing partner of Boldstart Ventures, says. Boldstart often writes the first check to seed enterprise startups. In fact, Boldstart was the first investor to invest in Greenplum, which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pivotal-files-for-ipo-2018-3?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="8331a0e8-411c-3ac4-acc1-f323a42b4613"> became part of Pivotal Software </a> .

The job gives Sim a window into the latest industry trends, and he pointed to a recent "low code, no code" theme in which startups build programs and apps with little to no code.

There's also massive potential in cloud and security, Sim says. Enterprises are still in the early stages of moving their workloads to clouds, which means that there are tons of opportunities for cloud startups to dive into. And with constant attacks and vulnerabilities in software, security startups can help strike the balance between security and how fast developers can build a product.

Here are three early trends that Sim is seeing.

Startups in this space make developing easier for users.. For example, Manifold ties together the best cloud services into one space for users to easily search, and RapidAPI also organizes API's on one site.

"At the end of the day, it's all about the developer," Sim told Business Insider. "You're going to win opportunities in the enterprise. Any startup leveraging that developer first trend is exciting."

What's more, these startups make it easier for people to build applications, often without writing code. Twilio, which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twilio-ceo-jeff-lawson-interview-one-year-after-ipo-2017-5?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="95a6146e-3701-317a-a5d3-d52edae26176"> had a $1.2 billion IPO in 2016 </a> , was one of the seminal companies in the sector. And a growing number of startups are making waves in the space, including Airtable, which allows users to build databases by entering data onto a spreadsheet-like interface and using drag and drop.

Another such company is Dark, currently a five person startup co-founded by Paul Biggar, one of the co-founders of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-ci-cd-software-development-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="eb0691f6-730f-39cc-a49d-ac6bcd41acd4"> developer tool CircleCI </a> . Dark promises that it can help people build applications in just an afternoon.

"It's getting easier and easier for regular people to code," Sim said.

<h1> "Security is going to get absolutely hot." </h1>

"Security is going to get absolutely hot," Sim said. "Every time you think about security, you think about tradeoff in speed versus security."

Observability startups are increasingly becoming key, Sim says. Observability is similar to monitoring, but they also help with alerting and analytics on how well a system works. Essentially, these startups monitor a system's performance to make sure everything is working.

For example, a startup called Snyk, which Boldstart seeded, automates the process of finding and fixing vulnerabilities in open source software.

"Not only are [developers] writing code and assembling code, but they're also putting it into production," Sim said. "Now there's all these vulnerabilities built in. Why not make developers security aware? That's going to become a really big thing next year."

Another security trend Sim sees is chaos engineering, which means that engineers purposely break things in order to test for vulnerabilities and outages, before they happen. This was spearheaded by Netflix developers in 2010 when they created Chaos Monkey, but more startups like Gremlin have joined the space.

Chaos engineering is similar to vaccinations, instead of injecting a virus or bacteria into your body to prevent diseases, engineers inject attacks into a system.

"Companies like Gremlin are out there talking about how you pull the plug on the database or server," Sim said. "Is the system going to bounce back? Is it resilient? It's like injecting problems before it breaks."

Serverless is starting to become the norm for enterprises, with Amazon Web Services developing serverless <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/analysts-say-amazon-and-vmware-are-teaming-up-to-take-down-microsoft-2018-12?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="6100cbb9-ab47-3815-a3d3-ad51bb745e8c"> databases like Timestream </a> and Aurora. Applications are run on the cloud instead, and companies can focus on building their application, rather than managing infrastructure.

"All you have to worry about is building your application or back end service," Sim said. "It automatically scales. It gives you even more agility. That's the promise of serverless technology."

As a result, there are now rising opportunities for startups to build tools to help enterprises support serverless applications, or applications built without servers and on the cloud instead. One startup that Boldstart seeded, IOpipe, which does monitoring for serverless applications.

This investor writes the first check to seed startups and he says 'low code, no code' is the next big thing in enterprise startups

Developers now have a new weapon from Google in their virtual arsenal to more easily design apps for both Apple iOS and Android.

On Tuesday, Google announced it would launch Flutter 1.0, a new toolkit for app developers.

Developers can use Flutter to design the interface for apps that can run on both iPhone and Android, including graphics, animations, and sounds. Flutter has been in beta for 10 months, but now it's being released to the public. However, even in its beta state, companies like CapitalOne have already used Flutter to build their apps for customers.

"Flutter enables you to build beautiful apps," Tim Sneath, Group Product Manager for Flutter, wrote in a blog post released on Tuesday. "We want to enable designers to deliver their full creative vision without being forced to water it down due to limitations of the underlying framework."

It's also released as open source, which means that people can download and use the code however they want for free. So far, it includes contributions from hundreds of developers worldwide, who all volunteered their time and expertise to get Flutter to that version 1.0 milestone.

Flutter is similar, conceptually, to Microsoft's Xamarin, a startup that allows programmers to develop apps for mobile and desktop and run it on any device or browser. <a id="12539c7b-cc2a-31f3-ac62-e29a857463c5" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-integrates-xamarin-with-visual-studio-2016-3?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Microsoft acquired Xamarin </a> for $400 million in 2016, and it's helped the tech titan <a id="b3ac76ac-96a2-368b-a5df-ff72646ac105" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-miguel-de-icaza-on-xamarin-acquisition-2017-3?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> win developers over to its Azure cloud </a> . With Flutter, Google could see similar dynamics, as developers building their apps on Flutter might be more inclined to choose Google Cloud to power their infrastructure.

However, Google touts unique features of Flutter such as stateful hot reload, which allows developers to make changes to their apps and see those changes in real time, without having to completely restart the app.

Flutter can be used to build new apps from scratch, but also to improve existing apps.

With its "Add to App" feature, Flutter can help developers add features to their existing applications. Another feature, called "Platform Views," allows Flutter-built apps to integrate with the operating system, such that it can show a user a Google Map, or control Apple Music. Both of these features are new in the 1.0 version, and Google promises improvements to both are in the works.

Google is also announcing other third-party integrations with Flutter, including an integration from mobile payment company Square that makes it easier to accept payments.

Within the company, Google Ads is already using Flutter to build its apps. Beyond Google's walls, Flutter already has various customers including Alibaba, as well as the aforementioned Capital One.

"Flutter can allow Capital One to think of features not in an ‘iOS or Android-first’ fashion, but rather in a true mobile-first model," Michael Jones, Senior Director of Engineering from the Capital One team, said in a statement. "We are excited to see Flutter 1.0 and continue to be impressed with the pace of advancement and the excitement in the engineering community."

Google is taking on one of Microsoft’s smartest acquisitions with a new tool for app developers (GOOG, GOOGL, MSFT)

<a id="2a1a32f4-4290-358a-a9d6-1740663ac098" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/slack?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Slack </a> , a $7 billion workplace messaging company launched five years ago, now has the nearly trillion-dollar Microsoft as its biggest competitor. And it's not a one-way street — Microsoft sees Slack as a threat.

This didn't happen overnight, Slack's chief technology officer and cofounder Cal Henderson said Monday at Business Insider's IGNITION conference in New York.

"The whole experience over the last few years has been like when you slowly boil a frog," Henderson said onstage. "They don't realize the water is getting hotter and hotter."

In August, Slack raised a massive $427 million <a id="afc45629-c203-3035-ab59-7c1967b12741" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/slack-funding-valuation-microsoft-teams-2018-8?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> that valued it at $7.1 billion </a> , and it's <a id="250f5c2d-9bc9-3d9e-afa4-0150b73e5950" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/slack-8-million-users-ipo-2018-5?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> not backing down </a> . At the same time, Microsoft has been <a id="29edc43f-6be2-363c-af06-08f0711b0b38" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-teams-gets-general-motors-technicolor-as-customers-2018-3?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> working to promote </a> its own office messaging product, Microsoft Teams.

Still, having Microsoft as a competitor can be a good thing for Slack.

"It's huge validation when a huge <a id="7ec08597-ce2a-3cb4-ad07-318f12b5a98d" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-acquires-xoxco-howdy-slack-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> competitor like Microsoft </a> enters the same space and builds a similar product," Henderson said. "They're saying, this is a product space that will continue and be important and enter into the next decade."

Since Slack started in 2009, the company has grown immensely. The first year and a half of the business was just building the product, and Henderson says his role has changed immensely from then to now.

<h1> Once youre sick of saying it, people start listening </h1>

"Once you build a product that fills the need that people need, then you can turn it into a business," Henderson said, adding: "My role as a leader largely becomes one of delivering priorities and vision. Once you're really sick of saying that, that's when people really start to hear it."

The key, Henderson says, is to believe that "you're definitely going to be successful."

"You have to believe this, even in the case of evidence like, all the odds are against you, but this time around, you're definitely going to be successful," Henderson said.

Now that companies such as Slack, Microsoft, and Google are vying for the top spot in office messaging, it shows how enterprises are increasingly working to increase communication. While Henderson said these apps could increase teamwork, he suggested they couldn't match the value of in-person communication.

"Face-to-face communication is still so rich," Henderson said. "That's never going to replaced by technology and media. We still get together when we can."

Slack cofounder Cal Henderson says having Microsoft become your top competitor is like when 'you slowly boil a frog' (MSFT)

As I put on a bulky white headset and adjusted it to fit my head, I found myself in a hospital room. One doctor leaned over a sleeping patient who had an air pumping device on his nose, while another was preparing tools. I felt like I was on an episode of " <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facts-about-greys-anatomy-2018-8?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="3da15fd1-1b89-3a49-a1c2-0d420b2ab3db"> Grey's Anatomy </a> ."

Suddenly, a floating robot head appeared, explaining that we would be learning how to identify and treat sleep apnea. It guided me towards the patient's nose, and before I knew it, I had jumped inside his nostril!

This was a simulation from SimforHealth, a French company that creates <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/virtual-reality-vr-side-effects-2018-3?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="17605dbd-d431-3e95-a188-91fdce395287"> virtual reality </a> simulations for medical students and pharmaceutical corporations. This simulation is supposed to teach medical students about sleep apnea, guiding students inside a virtual nose to show what happens to patients when they sleep. On this simulation, the inside of a nose looked like a pulsing red cave, with long, thin spikes coming out of the walls -- nose hairs, I assume.

Although virtual reality is typically associated with consumers, such as for video gaming, the technology is increasingly being adopted for use in professional settings. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vr-is-still-a-novelty-but-googles-new-app-could-make-it-serious-art-2018-3?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="8797904c-6688-3d5f-ab01-c8159ae48e0e"> VR </a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pokemon-go-niantic-real-world-platform-augmented-reality-apps-2018-6?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="52dd4a68-f74c-3060-a2bb-f0d145409be3"> augmented reality </a> are <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/insights/us/en/focus/signals-for-strategists/augmented-and-virtual-reality-enterprise-applications.html" id="185579e2-7814-34e2-aed7-6512f356b5a2"> projected to grow </a> to $162 billion by 2020, and more products are targeting enterprise use.

On Thursday, the VR company HTC VIVE announced its Vive Focus, an all-in-one <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-vr-headset-how-to-buy-2018-3?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="c250305e-b08f-3610-a690-93fe42d1317e"> headset </a> that includes storage, built-in speakers and more. It's targeted at businesses and can used for education and training simulation, including at NASA and hospitals.

What makes this hardware significant is that it's much simpler and more portable for customers to use, says Dan O'Brien, General Manager of the Americas at HTC VIVE. Other VR headsets that only developers may use might involve expensive hardware and require users to stay in one place.

The possibilities for this are endless, O'Brien says. This could be used for surgical and medical training, like when medical students might work together to perform a virtual surgery. This could even be used for automotive design, where employees can prototype and design cars in VR, or even learn to fix cars. Innoactive, a German VR enterprise software company, had partnered with Volkswagen to create a training scenario for workers to learn to put together a car in a factory.

"Executives are understanding they can save time and money," O'Brien said. "Their designers don't all have to fly to Germany to meet in one room and talk about design. They can go to VR design room and talk collaboratively there."

Primitive, which creates software development visualizations, created an app to review code. When I tried out this simulation, I was transported to a dark space with floating lines of code connected by a laser web -- a scene almost straight out of " <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/matrix-superhero-movie-analysis-marvel-dc-neo-wachowskis-film-2018-8?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest" id="06fba90a-4263-3811-ac52-579a9b11fe1b"> The Matrix </a> ."

It showed me how different files of code were linked, and with my laser pointer, I could pull up an entire floating page of code in front of my eyes. With this application, developers can work together to review code, circle the parts they want to highlight and dig through open source projects.

"It was quite fascinating because I was not a software coder myself," O'Brien said. "It's also about efficiency. When I sat in and watched 5 developers get in the space together, they were having intense conversations about the code."

In addition, VIVE had also launched its own workforce collaboration tool built specifically for enterprise called the VIVE Sync. This can be used to help employees collaborate with each other in a virtual space, especially when they work remotely. Each employee's avatar can share ideas, show presentations, import images, show videos and more all in a 3D virtual space.

In the coming months, Vive plans to launch developer kits to add to the headset so developers can create their own applications for VR. Although the buzz around VR has died down, O'Brien believes there will be tremendous growth for VR in the enterprise space.

"We see it growing at a really rapid rate,” O’Brien said. "We have seen consumer VR grow at a healthy rate. Now enterprise is growing faster than consumer."

LAS VEGAS — After expanding from retail sales to cloud computing, Amazon is now getting into satellites.

At the <a id="bd5e07bc-1be8-3c81-a095-66982881cb24" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heres-why-amazon-is-heavily-favored-to-win-the-10-billion-jedi-contract-2018-10?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> Amazon Web Services </a> annual <a id="9fabfec1-3f2e-3ed6-a3c9-0d1502868756" href="https://reinvent.awsevents.com/"> re:invent conference in Las Vegas </a> on Tuesday, the company unveiled plans to build a dozen satellite transmission facilities throughout the world. The so-called "ground stations" are essentially antenna-equipped facilities that can send and receive data from the thousands of satellites orbiting the earth.

Amazon will let customers rent access to the satellite ground stations in the same manner that they lease access to its computer datacenters. Companies that have not traditionally had the financial resources to build and operate their own satellite transmission infrastructure will be able to get access to satellite services on-demand, Amazon said.

That opens the door for a new variety of companies to do things like beam live concerts around the world or create services that leverage weather data and satellite-view photos of different regions.

"You figure out which ground station you want to interact with. You schedule effectively where you want that satellite interacting with that ground station," said Andy Jassy, CEO of <a id="b6821b64-345a-3c74-aff5-8681dd22afe4" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-might-move-hq2-to-crystal-city-because-of-jedi-pentagon-race-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> AWS </a> .

Amazon will be working with defense and aeronautics company Lockheed Martin to integrate AWS's service with Lockheed Martin's new Verge antenna network. Amazon already launched today with two ground stations, and the rest will be in operation by mid-2019.

Dr. Walter Scott, CTO of space technology company Maxar Technologies, said that it plans to use AWS Ground Station to analyze satellite imagery to help address critical issues like fighting ground fires or rescuing people at sea.

"Building that global ground network requires resources," Scott said. "It requires land and hardware, and AWS Ground Station lets us expand that network. It lets us do that in an elastic fashion."

Essentially, Amazon is building a network of 12 ground station antennas located all over the world, and <a id="57d675f5-34bf-3187-a3f8-70b7d0ddf985" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-web-services-robomaker-robotics-2018-11?utm_source=intl&amp;utm_medium=ingest"> AWS </a> will give customers on-demand access to lease these stations and download satellite data on a pay-as-you-go basis. Customers can then download, process, store and analyze satellite data. Once they have the data, they can process it on AWS' services, such asforstreaming, processing, analytics, and storage.

Previously, if organizations, especially governments, businesses and universities, wanted to use satellite data for things likeweather forecasting, surface imaging, and communications, they needed the infrastructure to do that, making it an expensive endeavor.

Pricing for Amazon Ground Station will be per-minute of downlink time, with an option to pre-pay for blocks of minutes, the company said. Amazon did not provide any details on the cost of building the ground stations.
