Robert Mugabe turns 94: Here are the five most outrageous gifts he’s ever received

Happy birthday Robert Mugabe

Zimbabwes ex-president Robert Mugabe is reportedly not going to have his regular extravagant birthday celebrations this year despite the 21st of February being declared a public holiday.

Born on February 21, 1924, Mugabe trained as a teacher and taught in what was then Rhodesia and Ghana before returning home to join the guerrilla war against white-minority rule.

Robert Mugabe turns 94 today and no official ceremony has been planned in the former leader’s honour.

We look back at some interesting gifts that the ex-president has been treated with on his birthday.

Mugabe is a big cake person. One birthday celebration back in 2013 was said to have featured an 89-kilogram item of confectionery and that really got tongues wagging.

Robert Mugabe isn't known for his subdued taste, and his million-dollar birthday when he turned 91 was just as extravagant as people have come to expect. Elephants were slaughtered to celebrate the Zimbabwean president's birthday.

A watch with his face on it

Robert Mugabe received an array of expensive gifts, including a nine-carat gold wristwatch with his face on it from his own Cabinet.

A gold-studded royal throne

Mugabe was given a one-ton, gold and diamond-studded stone “Royal throne” in 2014. It took two years to make and was furnished with the skins of leopards and crocodiles. The “Simbahwe” also comes with two huge claws on the arm-rests. How classy!
