The capital Lome and several other cities like Sokode were the venues of the protests as thousands of red clad citizens sought an end to the Gnassingbe dynasty of the country.

According to reports, two protesters were killed when security forces opened fire and hundreds have also been injured with many taking to social media to show evidence of police brutality.

Faure Gnassingbe took over in 2005 after the death of his father Eyadema, who held power for 38 years.

Protesters want a return to term limits that were enshrined in the 1992 constitution following similar protests. That constitution limited presidential terms to two while allowing for a semblance of multi party democracy.

The country's military discarded the constitution after the death of Eyadema.
