Ghana rolls out West Africa’s first smart drivers' license and it will cost users $59

The digital drivers' licence is part of government’s target to remove the human interface from the process of issuing new licencing.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Ghana has started issuing smart drivers' licenses across the country.

This new introduction is the first in West Africa that is according to the director in charge of Driving Training, Testing and Licencing at the DVLA, Cheyuo Wienna Musah.

Acquiring the new drivers' license will attract an additional $21 separate from the present charges on all other services including replacement ($15 + $21 = $35), new license ($38 +$21 = $58) and transferring a foreign license to Ghanaian one ($82 + $21 = $101).

The new digital card is expected to make it easy for drivers to secure new drivers' licenses within two to four weeks.

Authorities say, the digital card is will improve dwindling revenue from the DVLA.

The smart drivers' licence has a contactless chip to promote good storage of bio-data and personal driver information.

It will also make use of the latest technology for secure ID printing that can be easily integrated with other systems of the DVLA.
