The makers of Christmas favourite Quality Street have been branded a 'Scrooge' by the internet over this depressing picture of its tins over the years.

Customer Charlotte Stacey Hook‎ posted a photo on Facebook of the Quality Street tins she had kept to store Christmas decorations in.

Charlotte, of Washington, Tyne and Wear, wrote: "Been putting the Christmas tree up, always keep my tins to put my decorations in after Christmas!

"Look how they've changed in size from 1998 till 2014! Bring back the big tins! Loyal Quality Street customer!"

Charlotte's post on Tuesday has gone viral, being shared more than 30,000 times and liked by more than 80,000 people since.

The latest tin, weighing 780g, is less than half the size it was to the left of the picture, when it weighed 1.7kg.

However, food giant Nestlé, which now owns the British favourite, has said the picture represents an unfair comparison since there is still a larger 1.3kg tub on sale.

The Quality Street box includes 12 varieties of chocolate from the most popular purple one, which includes a hazelnut and soft toffee centre, to the Toffee Penny and Strawberry Delight.

A Nestlé spokesman said: "This image does not compare like for like.

"As well as the 780g tub pictured, we also have a 1.3kg tin available which lovers of Quality Street might like to try this Christmas.

"We want to give the best possible value for money and we believe that this product is still extremely competitive."
