According to Systrom's Instagram account, they talked about the power of images to bring people together across social boundaries, but media reports don't say if they discussed opening a papal Instagram account.
The Vatican currently has a verified Instagram account with around 78,900 followers. If Pope Francis does launch his own account, it may help kill off the many accounts posing as His Holiness on the photo-sharing social media platform.
The pope's Twitter page was launched in 2012 and currently has 9.87 million followers.
