Can Medeama equal Kotoko’s enviable feat in Algeria?

Medeama need a point to secure historic qualification to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederations Cup, as they face M.O Bejaia on Tuesday.

In fourteen trips to Algeria by Ghanaian clubs, they have lost on twelve occasions and drawn only two. The draws came in their last two visits.

Asante Kotoko were also a victim of poor performance on Algerian, soil but they broke that jinx in 2013 when they held JSM Bejaia to a goalless draw and in 2015 shared honours with El Eulma.

Clubs like Hearts of Oak, Eleven Wise, Dwarfs, Ashanti Gold and Kotoko themselves have all suffered one or several defeats in Algeria.

Medeama who are on 8 points in group A of the CAF Confederation Cup will have to earn at least a point to match on to the last four.

A win will enable M.O Bejaia who are on five points to amass eight points but surpass Medeama through the application of the head to head rule.

The Algerian Giants managed to pick up a point in Sekondi in a game that ended a goalless draw. Hence a win against Medeama will put them level, behind T.P Mazembe, who have already qualified for the semi-finals.

Medeama produced an incredible display to beat T.P Mazembe in their final group A home game at Sekondi when they scored a late minute goal to boost their chances of making history.

Head to head

Ghanaian clubs have faced Algerian oppositions in 29 games.  Algerian clubs have won 14, while Ghanaian sides have eight victories, with seven games ending in draws.
