Media reports indicate that the US federation is exploring the possibility of bringing  major countries together that missed the Russia boat for a pre tournament .

The concept of a bizarre alternative to Russia 2018 has gained some momentum in the States after former champions Italy were knocked out by Sweden earlier this week.

The list of nations missing from next summer's tournament includes the Americans, Holland, Chile, Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Ghana as well as the Scots, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

According to the BBC, the idea seems to have caught on with major US broadcasting networks who had invested millions in rights purchases for the showpiece in Russia. Other federations could also be tempted by the cash on hand even though they could be forced to field weakened teams due to a congested football schedule.

Several players from these countries would be on holiday by the tim elf the tournament and it is highly unlikely fielding weakened teams with unknown names will generate as much excitement.
