9 worst ministers in Ghana

It has been 11 months since they took office and as some are working tirelessly to help the president achieve his objectives others are also working poorly.

Pulse.com.gh in no particular order has named 9 ministers who we believed worked poorly in 2017.

• Minister of Agriculture

The Minister has had to deal with the army worm invasion which has destroyed hectares of farmlands in all regions within the country.

The Minister after a while disclosed that his ministry has handled the situation. He said there was no more invasions.

However, farmers and the General Agric Workers Union (GAWU) insist the minister is just lying to Ghanaians.

Meanwhile Agric experts have predicted a shortage of food in 2018

• Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources

Ghana is still filthy. The sector Minister Joseph Kofi Adda, has not really done anything to better the sanitation of the country.

The National Sanitation Day which was instituted by the erstwhile Mahama government is currently in shambles. Little or no strategies have been put in place to ensure people observe the day as such.

He is quoted to have said that the ministry is clearing a GHc 892 million debt, which has created sanitation challenges in cities and towns.

• Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture

Many Ghanaians in the fishing industry have complained about the depleting fish stock in the country under the leadership of Elizabeth Afoley Quaye.

The Minister has also been accused of appointing her brother Joseph Botchwey, as the Acting Administrator of the National Premix Committee.

But in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, the Minister, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye rubbished the claim, saying “will you not appoint a competent brother of yours to hold a position in your office? Would you not? Because you hate your relations, even when they are competent enough to hold positions, you will not give it to them?”

• Minister of Monitoring and Evaluation

The Minister is yet to present any report from monitoring and evaluating his fellow ministers.

However, many have questioned whether he could not present quarterly reports for the general public to know what the government officials are doing.

• Minister of Education

Let us start from the appointment of ambassadors for Free Senior High School (SHS). Many Ghanaians criticised this decision but the minister still implemented his decision.

Many have also described Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as a loose talker after he attacked and described his predecessor, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was an "embarrassment” and a "disgrace" as minister in the erstwhile administration.

• Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Creative Arts

Catherine Abelime has not done much in the industry.

We agree that the Ministry entails a lot more sectors than many know but that does not mean the Minister should be inactive.

Even the singing and acting industry which most people limit her ministry to have not developed so much since she took over as Minister.

Nothing has been heard from the tourism ambassadors who were appointed to help the industry grow.

• Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection

Otiko Afisa Djaba had issues even during her vetting.

She later started her duties as gender minister on a rather rough note granting media interviews that did not go well with most people.

She also clashed with the Northern regional chairman, Bugri Naabu over the selection of matrons for the school feeding program in the region.

There are also constant clashes with other over who is selected as what under the school feeding program.

• Minister of Youth and Sports

One thing that unites Ghanaians is football. Ghanaians love their football. The failure of the Senior national team, Black stars to qualify to the world cup under his watch is enough disappointment.

The Ghana Premier League is still suffering and not attracting the needed attention from the same football loving Ghanaians who will give anything to watch the EPL.

Meanwhile the other disciplines are still lagging behind and no concrete plane has been developed to make them better.

• Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs

The Minister Kofi Dzamesi was criticised when he decided against the will of many Ghanaians to organise a Christian pilgrimage for some Ghanaians.

The Minister after he was sworn into office, promised to solve 40 percent of chieftaincy disputes in the country by end of 2017.

The year is almost ending and we are yet to see him realise this vision.
