Each bereaved family gets GHC5,000 from government

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia made the presentation on Friday evening when he met with the bereaved families and school authorities in Kumasi to express the government’s condolences.

He further indicated that the government will foot the hospital and funerals expenses of the deceased students.

The Ministry of Health in a press conference on Thursday attributed the cause of deaths at the school to Influenza A virus H1N1.

The flu has claimed over 7 lives in the Kumasi Academy high school located in the Ashanti region of Ghana.

The numerous deaths sparked national outrage as authorities struggled to find out what caused the unfortunate incidence.

Students were subsequently put on a cocktail of antibiotic medication administered free of charge. Teachers and other non-teaching staff were also not left out.
