A CV is a summary of ones skills and experience. When applying for job outside the United States, please use a CV instead of a Resume.

Yes, I know you are probably wondering if they are not used interchangeably or mean the same thing. The answer is no. A CV is quite different from a resume. A CV includes more information than a resume. A resume is typically a page long but a CV is at least two pages but not more than three pages. CVs includes more information particularly on academic background, such as teaching experience, research, awards, degrees, publications, presentations, and other achievements.

SUPPLIES NEEDED

Before you begin to write your CV, know what information that is generally included in a CV. This may include;

  • Certain personal information, your educational history, qualifications, accomplishments, skills, hobbies, interest and photos (this is optional. And a professional head shot is recommended)
  • You then need to research the company and in order to tailor your experience to fit what they are looking for. What skills they are looking out for? What they expect from their employee? Keep these in mind when writing your CV. Also find out more information from the company's website. There may be additional information or instructions pertaining to your application.
  • Prepare by making a list of all the relevant information which needs to be included. Write down all jobs you have held with dates. Brainstorm hobbies and interest that portray a positive image suited for what the company is looking for. Make a list of your skills and put your most relevant ones forward.
  • Have a couple of good CV samples available. You may pull some from the internet or take a look at your friends. This will give you a fair idea of what to expect.

STEPS

Follow these steps to write a CV that gets you called back for an interview;

Step 1: Write your personal info. This includes your date of birth, nationality, number of children, contact details and a photo (if using any). Do not add unimportant details such as the ages /of your children or religious affiliation. This section can also include a brief personal profile (this is optional)

 

Step 2: The next section is your educational history and qualifications. This should be presented in a reverse chronological order with your most current at the top. Also include dates for each educational milestone. You should also include the course undertaken and your grades point average.

 

Step 3: move on to your work experience. This is a list of of all jobs you hold and have held in the past. This should also be written in the reverse chronological order, with your most current job beginning the list. Also include dates for the period of time held at a particular job. Add the name of the company, its location, your position and duties held.

 

Step 4: this is where you present your most relevant skills. You should research the company to know the kind of skills which they will be interested in and include them. This might be additional foreign languages or computing skills. This is where you present your skills you have acquired and what you have accomplished over the years.

 

Step 5: Present your interest and hobbies. Keep in mind that these portray a picture of you as an individual as such list ones that will put you out there as an active team member.

 

Step 6: You may also include a section for references. Even though this is optional it is best to provide contact details of people you have worked with. Your future employer may contact them to cross check the information that you have provided. This may be your previous boss, a colleagues or your lecturer. Seek for their permission before your list them on your CV. A minimum of two people is recommended.

WHAT A CV SHOULD NOT CONTAIN

  • A CV should not have inconsistent fonts. Make sure your front is consistent and readable thorough out.
  • Some things not to include in your CV is your salary history and why your left your last job. Also include action words which begin with a verb and end with an action when writing your CV. Make use of bullet points and spacing to keep it clean and easy to read. Never exaggerate or falsify information on your CV. This will paint you as dishonesty to your employer and there could be consequences such as being charged with fraud.
  • Don’t forget to edit, edit and edit. Also have someone proof read your work.
