On Wednesday (May 3, 2017) WhatsApp went down for a couple of hours.

Many WhatsApp users took to other social media platforms especially Facebook which also owns WhatsApp to express their frustrations.

However, there are other social media apps that can serve the same purpose as WhatsApp does.

• Telegram

The open-source messaging app is still the best WhatsApp alternative out there. This is because of some features it has developed in the years. Despite the similar features both WhatsApp and Telegram have, the latter has other features. This include the super groups of up to 5,000 people, public channels, usernames, ability to share files of up to 1.5 GB, passcode lock, self-destructing messages.

• Viber

This messaging app started out as a direct competitor to Skype.

Users can send text, picture and video messages. However, voice calling and some other features are limited to Android, iPhone and Windows Phone.

Viber is available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone, as well as Samsung’s Bada and Nokia’s Symbian and Series 40, plus the desktop.

• Imo

When one is using imo, you can text, and also make voice and video calls. You can also create or belong to chat groups just as WhatsApp.

Imo is free on the Android, iPhone and iPad

• Skype

Skype is popularly known for voice and video calling, but it also has an instant messaging function.

It is available for Android, iPhone, Windows Phone and BlackBerry, as well as desktops, home phones TVs and games consoles.

Skype allows you to send text messages, images, videos, voice messages and send group messages.

• Google Allo

Even though, Allo is fairly a new messaging app from Google. The best feature in Allo is the integration of the Google Assistant in a chat form.

In Allo, you can use Assistant to get information on weather, flights, news, nearby places, or anything else you’d like. You can also use it to set alarms, reminders, navigate to places, play games and more.

• Send a text (SMS)

Yes, you can go the traditional way. Use the Short Message Service (SMS). It is also available on all mobile phones.
